Ok, recently I started a new save on Portal 2, and I'm greeted with Wheatley breaking Chell out of her relaxtion vault and getting the ASHPD. However, this time around, I payed attention the the number that the narrator says how long she has been asleep for. When you first wake up, he says you've been in suspenion for 50 days, basically the equivilant of nearly 2 months. This is the amount of time that has passed since Chell defeated GLaDOS. After taking her physical exam and going back to sleep, she finds when that at least 99,999 days has passed since she last woke up. Using this number as a basis, I grabbed a calculator and did 99999 divided by 365, which gave me the answer of 273. The amount of time Chell was in suspension for was AT LEAST (possibly even more) was 273 years, 1 month and 20 days. And this is only part of the overall number. When Wheatley knocks on the door, he interrupts the narrator and we don't get a complete number of how long she was asleep for. It's remarkable that her body was able to survive for that long, and even GLaDOS thinks it's remarkable for her to come out of suspecion and 'pack on a few pounds'.

The computer is not giving out a specific number of ninety nine thousand nine hundred ninety nine days. It is giving a prerecorded message that is skipping like a record "9...9...9...9...9..." It has been long enough that the computer system that is supposed to be monitoring the humans in stasis sleep has some catastrophic failure. We don't really know how long she has been asleep. Grabbing for a calculator is overthinking it.

There are actually 55 nines in a row in the audio file (they repeat in the background behind the next quote from the Announcer). Various people from Valve have said that she's been asleep for around 60 thousand years, or thereabouts. We really don't know. The repeated nines are more likely to be from a malfunction than an accurate count.

In any case, Chell has been asleep for a very long time.

Right I know this is an old discussion but I have done the maths to find out the answer to this and couldn't resist answering, so using this http://i1.theportalwiki.net/img/1/1d/Announcer_openingcourtesy01.wav I counted the amount of days Chell had been in suspension which was 9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999, I then tried to use google to give me that in years, the number it spat out was 2.73791e56, I put this into an exponents calculator which for some reason gave me 3.129488844409788e24 I put that number back in and it gave me 778684960148.6571 years or in other words,

Days: 27
Hours: 10
Minutes: 35
Seconds: 19
Milliseconds: 680

60,000 years or so eh? Portal 1 took place as the Combine invaded Earth in HL2, so 60,000 years later seems like PLENTY of time for the Combine Oversears or whatever those floating telekinetic catarpiller things are to come up with a new plan and give us an episode 3 don't you think? perhaps a caterpiller discovers Glados or something..
