Crash on Startup

When I try to play, I get the "Preparing to Launch" screen for a few seconds and it just dissapears and never launches. I have tried clicking the .exe directly, same result. No error messages ever pop up. I have been able to play this game on this machine before, I can't figure out the problem. Yes, I have tried disable AV/Firewall.

Specs:
Windows 8.1
16 GB RAM
i7 3770 @ 3.4 GHz
1 GB GTX 560 ti

Try to verify the game cache files.

Video driver is most recent. Verifying game cache didn't fix it. Tried several times.

another way is to verify the the game files.
right-click the game then properties, under local files click verify

same thing as game cache. Try reinstalling it perhaps...
I've been having the same problem and haven't found a solution yet :/

Seen lots of this in "discussions" lately. Valve, are you seeing this? do something...

I'm having the same problem here... I've tried all the possible solutions given but it still crashes on the first screen (after the Valve logo)...

EDIT: I've tried now to disable tha Avira Web Protection and the game worked like a charm!

look in the windows event viewer under "Application" and post the result here. You can start portal2 and when it crashes the newest entry in the event viewer is for the portal2.exe then.

I had the same problem with PayDay2 and Portal2. And on both games works this:

1) Remove local content
2) Restart PC
3) Download and Instal
4) Play

Me 2, no result
