REPLACE any files in the new directory and start the game with your save.

I see some complaints about the enemy leveling in the game so I'd like to take a chance to at least let players know what they are getting into specifically before had and how it works with a quick rundown of how it works. When you first enter an area in remnant, the average level of your gear (known as gear score) is taken and that is essentially the level of the enemies that will spawn in that area until you regenerate that area by restarting the campaign. So, i enter a floor of a dungeon at level 4, i clear it and enter the boss room at 4 as well. If I'm unprepared for that boss and getting absolutely shafted, its an option to backtrack to the previous area, which remains level 4, raise my gear level to 5, and then go beat the boss, which would still be at level 4. Going to the area after the boss would have it set to 5 in this scenario. It allows you the chance to go against bosses at a similar strength level to what the devs intended originally without allowing for vast levels of variation. If you prefer the challenge, you can go at the boss all you want and work on beating it at the intended level. On my first playthrough, i only had to go back and farm a level for around 2 of the bosses.

Hope someone will take a second to read this and at least have an idea of how it works. People just assume its autoscaling in every area without the full clearing of the campaign but that is not the case.

Remnant: From The Ashes (RFTA) is a hybrid between a traditional 3rd person Shooter RPG, such as The Division, and the Souls-like genre. Set in a time when an inter-dimensional plague known as the Root devastated Earth and other worlds, players will be tasked in finding a way to stop it, and in doing so traverse many strange, dangerous dimensions and planets, looking for the truth about not only the Root, but also their hidden destiny.

This mixture of genres plays out surprisingly well, taking many elements characteristic of Souls games: rolls with i-frames, replenish-able healing items, map shortcuts, bonfires, material-based gear upgrading system, special boss items, and plenty of secret areas where to find unique loot or puzzles. The Souls-like part is not predominant though, as many elements from traditional RPG-FPS also are significant in the gameplay, such as upgrading Traits (passives) to build a specialized character, enemy scaling based on gear level, or equipping the right sets, weapons, and mods, which grant active skills charged by dealing damage, that best suit your class' purpose.

Solo or in co-op, players will have to traverse various areas filled with enemies and loot, first on Earth and then in other alien worlds. Each zone has a "main path" to follow, and several secondary dungeons. Because of random generation, bosses, area types, and secondary dungeons as well are different every play-through. As a consequence, each player can end up with different boss weapons, items, and gear pieces compared to others, because their worlds are different. Of course playing together in the same world means getting the same gear. This mechanic boosts replay-ability by a lot, with the chance of finding what was missed in the previous run, and since there are three difficulties to clear, that is good.

On the bad side, it has to be said that boss fights, in general, are rather underwhelming as they rely more upon spamming tons of trash mobs to create difficulty, rather than having better boss design themselves. Other than this, optimization is not very good, with slow-downs even on high-end builds in certain areas, nothing too serious. The fact some mods or weapons are much more powerful than others, and because of RNG they can be missed, unbalances the late-game phases a bit, especially against the final boss, where specific mods and weapons are fundamental. Level design is also not the best, with places looking all too similar to each other.

I suggest this game to any Souls fans, and also to who enjoyed games such as The Division, meaning TPS-RPGs. Offering about 16-18 hours of content for one run, with three difficulties to clear, good replay-ability, i can suggest full price purchase to fans of either genre that also have a team to play with, while players just curious are better off waiting for at least a small sale.

- Most bosses have sub-par design, relying mostly on trash mob spam to create difficulty, rather than better mechanics.
- Level design lacks verticality, and is rather generic, repetitive: every path and area looks very similar to others, to the point of players getting lost because of it.
- Some gear pieces are under-powered, gimmicky or useless, could use a balance rework.



🎮 Gameplay Analysis
The gameplay of RFTA is divided into Exploration, Character Management and Combat.

Exploration goes through linear levels, containing a main path with several bosses for each zone, then several secondary dungeons, which can as well contain bosses, arenas, puzzles, or other special areas from which players can get unique loot, additional XP, or quest items. Levels are randomized for each player's world, and so are the secondary dungeon types, areas, and bosses found. There is a good amount of secrets, hidden items to find for the keen of sight, so exploring deeply every zone is strongly encouraged. Some NPCs can be met during travels, many of which turn out to be merchants, selling unique loot, crafting materials, and even triggering quests at times. Most found Crystals (bonfires) can be used as fast-travel points to-and-from your base, where all traders and upgrade facilities reside.

Character Management consists in upgrading, swapping and modding weapons, gear pieces and accessories in order to best optimize your hero for a role, such as DPS, Tank, and so on. This is done mainly at the Ward, base of operations, where several traders offer upgrading and selling of new gear, mods and accessories. Materials gathered in the world, such as Iron types or unique boss materials, can be used to improve gear or craft new ones. Trait points, gained with XP from killing enemies, quests, are used to upgrade passive abilities giving more Stamina, Resistance to specific damage types, and many other bonuses. Respec is available, but only after finishing the game the first time, as a consumable. Generally, building a specialized character with a given role is better than a jack of all trades, and since there are no usage requirement for weapons, abilities or mods, players have more build freedom. Mods power scales with weapon upgrade level, growing as the weapon they are fitted inside of does.

Combat is the core of RFTA, and plays out in a very souls-like fashion, where learning enemy attack patterns, dodging at the right time, learning how to use i-frames, and generally being careful about even the lowest of enemy peons, are all fundamental mechanics, especially at higher difficulties. Teamwork is essential, especially in boss fights, where some players take care of trash mobs while others dedicate only to damaging the boss. Soloing bosses and areas is also possible given the scaling system, but ultimately harder. The various damage types (fire, radiation, bleeding, etc.) from both players and bosses, with relative weaknesses or resistances and status effects, give more depth to the system, having players keep multiple damage type weapons for different situations. Consumables are very important in getting rid of said status effects, long-lasting and crippling most of the time. Overall, the combat of RFTA is a serious challenge, and generally is satisfying for both souls-fans and TPS-RPG players.


🔩 Performance Analysis
Some areas have slowdowns even on high-end systems, but generally the performance is acceptable without many major issues to report. No crashes or major bugs to report. [Ryzen 9 3900X, RTX 2080Ti, 32GB RAM DDR4].

Overall, RFTA is definitely a solid co-op shooter that blends elements from different genres successfully, creating an ultimately satisfying and challenging gameplay formula.

Remnant has so many things going for it that it's hard to believe.
The attention to detail is honestly impressive, especially with the dynamic generation of each map.

- The atmosphere is captivating, every where you go, every thing you see sets the mood of the area very well.
- The enemy design is refreshing, each area has different sets of "grunt" enemies, and different sets of "elites" so each encounter feels completely different than the last.
- The story/lore is quite extensive if you actually want to sit down and understand it.
- The gunplay mechanics are very snappy and satisfying and the balance of melee and gunplay is very well implemented.
- The LOOT. Oh my days; The LOOT.
Now, this isn't a normal looter shooter, ex. (Borderlands, Destiny, etc.) where you get a bunch of useless weapons, a few good ones rarely, and legendary ones even more rarely. No. Every boss you kill drops a signature item, specific to that boss, which can be used to craft a weapon or weapon mod. This system encourages you to play through multiple times to eventually fight every boss, and get every item. On TOP of every boss having specific loot, multiple bosses have ALTERNATE ways to kill them for ANOTHER piece of gear!

On top of bosses dropping items that turn into weapons/mods, there are random encounters and puzzles around the worlds that grant you armors and other non-boss related weapons.

Seriously, this game just has so much to look out for that if you never check every inch of the map, you're likely to miss something every run.

- The difficulty at first can be a learning curve. I for one enjoyed learning the mechanics of the bosses, but if you're someone that doesn't enjoy dying over and over again, or always looks for a way to cheese bosses, then this game is not for you.
While some of the bosses do have some cheesey methods to kill them quickly, I can assure you those are only capable on Normal and not Hard or Nightmare.
- The content of the game can seem to run out quickly if you get a couple back to back runs with multiple new encounters each time, but that is RNG based. I've so far logged nearly 40 hours and have ~70% of the in game items.

- Walls are not your friends. What I mean is, some, if not all bosses, can hit you through walls with melee attacks that you would normally feel comfortable near. One boss in particular has a stretching arm attack that can go through pretty thick walls in his encounter which can catch you off guard. While this is easy to play around when you learn of it, I still don't think it should be in the game because bosses are already a ride of their own.


Overall, Remnant is a steal for $40 USD. I can't wait to see what's in store for the game.

It's really good, though in a weird way I think. I've played quite a few games that look good on paper but are just crap in execution, this game seems to be the exact opposite. Everything in this game seems so disjointed and nonsensical but for some reason it ends up a fairly fun to play.

The game itself feels like a mix of several other games. It's a bit like warframe in that you get a primary weapon, secondary weapon and melee weapon. Instead of the skills warframes get you can slot a single mod per weapon. It has some of borderlands crazy weapons as well. Crossbows that shoot 5 bolts at a time, a pistol that shoots exploding orbs, or a the ricochet rifle that shoots energy disks that bounce everywhere. The game doesn't have many weapons though (about 15-20 of each type) but still has some strange options, that combined with armor that gives bonus stats and the rings and amulets that can give pretty powerful effects as well the game does have a decent build variety. The weapon mods can range from normal things like grenade launcher and flamethrower addons to full on magic spells.

The gameplay also has a bit of dark souls like mechanics. There are large bosses that you need to learn the fight mechanics/attacks and apply dodging correctly to win. The atmosphere is fairly dark and dismal in a souls-ish fashion. Though it has rogue like elements too. The game only generates so many dungeons in your campaign, and it's not enough to have every boss. So the bosses you'll see in a play through are somewhat random. In addition to that, some bosses (and a few events) have multiple ways to win resulting in a different reward which can then be turned into a weapon/mod. This randomness is to encourage replay, which is a game design I usually find tedious and boring, again it somehow works here.

I love this game. To those who say it's too short: you've seen about half the game at most. There are 40 bosses in total, if you include the DLC.

It's procedural so each play-through includes different map layouts, special events, locations, bosses and enemies. Higher difficulties reveal special enemies and events you don't get at easier settings.

If you don't fancy replaying the whole game - adventure mode is for you, which allows you to run through on area, with associated bosses and dungeons, meaning you can see most of the game barring certain inter-map bosses/encounters. Very roguelike, plenty to do way beyond a single story playthrough. There's at least one boss which spawns only in adventure mode. Excellent, bold move in the dev's part. After that there's also Survival Mode, where you start with very few items and play until you die ...

My main complaint: like many (RPG) games, it gets the difficulty curve wrong. It's at its hardest at the start, when you have no perks or special weapons and haven't quite worked out the skills. Dark Souls gets this right and the game remains a real challenge to the end. Remnant doesn't get super easy but it definitely gets easier. I started on "Normal" difficulty and it seemed like Normal difficulty would be enough... but by halfway through, with the weapons and mods I had, i realised it was getting too easy and had to restart - that being the only way to reset difficulty.

Secondly: the level of each area is based on your weapon/armour levels when you enter the area, with a heavy bias towards your single highest level item, so levelling one or two items quickly really works against you as other bits of gear lag behind. Tip: level everything just one level at a time (to keep them all at the same level).

In general, it's better not to level gear unless you absolutely have to and want a bonus against the current area/boss, but you'll pay for it in the next when difficulty ramps up, since fighting higher level enemies makes them slightly harder and once you get to level 20, that's it. No more out-levelling the game by upgrading equipment - though new traits/skills will continue to make the game easier.

I finished the main game + DLC with gear at level 16 (Hard difficulty) where in my first playthroughs I'd levelled one weapon to 20 in just by half way through. Not that this made the game excessively hard, barring a couple of bosses, but it does make the game experience inconsistent. Boss weapons which require special resources to upgrade only level to 10 and count double for difficulty purposes. So a level 8 boss weapon counts as if it's level 16 when calculating dificulty.

If you are playing in a party, playing coops, it uses the levels of the weapons carried by all players, so if someone has something super upgraded the others might find themselves having issues...even if that party member leaves, the area remains at the higher level once generated.

Players need to have all this explained to them so they definitely get it and there's no way they can miss it. Over and over. e.g. have a popup appear when they level a weapon which changes their effective level saying "Levelling this weapon to level 12 will increase your effective level from 11 to 12, which will increase the strength/difficulty of enemies in any new areas you enter, for your whole party. It will not affect enemies in locations you have already visited. Do you want to proceed?". At the moment I think the only place you can see your weapon level is on the opening character selection screen.

The game takes no account of player level, traits/skills gained etc when setting difficulty, which seems odd. Even if it's just +1 level per 50,75 or even 100 trait points, some account should be taken.

Like Dark Souls, Remnant makes use of iframes - but never explicitly mentions or explains this and both games fall foul on this one. If you're new to the genre - iframes are grames of various animations during which a player usually will not take damage. Most obviously in rolls/dodges, so even if an enemy hits you and you're mid roll, you won't take damage. You're vulnerable at the start and finish of each roll, so it's not a get out of jail free card, and timing rolls is key, depending on the enemy attack, but it's an intended feature and not knowing about it is a hinderance. I don't know if Remnant does this but certainly in Dark Souls, the lighter your encumbrance, the further you roll and the less time you spend in the vulnerable 'getting up' and 'starting roll' animation phases ... but since Remnant does talk about armour encumbrance quite a bit, I assume that the heavier you armour the less effective your rolls, as a trade off...


There are weapons of different types, e.g. radiation, bleed, freeze, but apparently different enemies don't have different resistances. So, once I got my super bleed crossbow and a ring which transferred bleed damage to healing for me, I mostly stuck with it. TBH the crossbow as OPAF long before that, but the fact that I could, for example, cause bleed damage on a black hole seemed nonsense. Apparently this was a conscious decision by the devs who wanted all builds to work on all enemies, which to me seems like a really bad decision. It trivialises weapon choice, levelling, depth and reduces the longevity of the game. I mean, i had to grind up a fast firing weapon for the Ixillis boss fight one fight, as I didn't have one, and that's not too different to grinding up a weapon with say poison damage because you know it's particularly effective against certain enemies i'm having issues with.

Also: let me reset difficulty mid-way through a playthrough, instead of having to restart, so that all new areas generated are created with the new difficulty and I don't have to go back to the beginning. OK, so only credit me for having completed it at the lowest difficulty I set during any one playthrough but as long as you give me PLENTY of warning about this, that's fine. I am playing because I enjoy the gameplay. At most make me replay the area/zone I am in.

Also: make difficulty selection more apparent at the start of the game. There's a reason most games have it separate from the character designer: it's out of place and isn't part of the character creation process. Players don't expect to see it there, they're likely to miss it.

This is always the burning question I ask myself when a new prosperous game is released and like many gamers out there, I have a very bad addiction for buying games and not playing them... So is this game worth a buy? Is it worth your money? Is it going to keep you captivated long enough before the next hit-title to come along and grab your attention?

The short answer - Yes. It's completely and utterly worth your money.

Overall the game is solid.

Great graphics. Brilliant to play with friends. Loads of re-playable content. Costs less money than a AAA-Title release, yet feels like a AAA-Title game. I can't grumble, best buy of the summer.

I'm almost 30hrs into the game when writing this review and I'm on my third play-through. There's still a lot of stuff I'm yet to unlock or level-up skills in, but I am now reaching a point that I'm craving some new content - new enemies or a fresh map to explore. So it will keep you happily entertained for quite some time, but you will reach a barrier where you're waiting for some DLC to drop. Thankfully there is plenty of DLC on it's way with this game and my final word is that this game has HUGE POTENTIAL going forward.

I am excited to see what else will be in store.

Definitely pick this game up, you won't be disappointed if you enjoy - Destiny/Dark-Souls/Gear of War.

Let me get this straight. I like the game a lot. It has it's flaws, but it is a great game. What I don't like (and what is the reason for this negative review) is that the devs intimidate and ban people who leave a negative review.

Basically, someone downvoted the dlc because he didn't like it. There was nothing personally insulting, just an opinion that the dlc wasn't worth it. The devs responded in the comment section, slandered him, then removed their own comments and banned him.

This type of abuse of power means it is a company that you darn well best avoid, even if they'd make the best game possible.

I absolutely adore this game.

The gameplay is satisfying, the world is atmospheric, and the story, while not anything overly complex or deep, was intriguing enough to keep me interested to the end. Remnant is one of the few games where I knew I’d enjoy it based on what few minutes of gameplay I saw, and I was not disappointed in the slightest.

If you’re coming into this game expecting a mind-blowing story, I’d say lower your expectations a bit. It’s not bad, but it’s also not that deep. You won’t care for the NPCs because your only real interaction with them all is buying necessities or upgrading your weapons/armor. They come across as merchants more than anything else. The backstory behind Ward 13 and all that took place was pretty interesting, and it was fun unlocking more levels to read what lead to destruction. It reminded me a bit of fallout, going through an abandoned bunker and reading through the computer logs to try and piece together what happened to it and its inhabitants. The root mother’s story was also intriguing, however, beyond the journal and the original conversation you have with her it’s not developed further and that was a little disappointing. But nothing was more disappointing than your meeting with Ford. This could be because you’re following in his footsteps and come across a few of his journals that contain his observations and adventures. The game hypes him up to be one of the most interesting characters, and yet, unfortunately, this was probably the most exciting part about him because when you finally come face to face the entire thing was extremely anti-climactic. You meet, he’s worn down and in a cave. Gives a small spill about how maybe you could be the one to save them, gives you a key, and sends you on your way. Honestly, I wouldn’t have complained if he died, or if we had to battle to free him. Also, to whom it may concern, your choices don’t seem to have much of an impact on what NPCs say unless you’re trying to pick a fight.

The selling point for me was gameplay, as it more than makes up for the story’s faults. The pacing is incredible, the dungeons aren’t so short they’re forgettable or too long they’re boring. You have a decent enough breather between bosses to test out new weapons and mods before you have to face another, and they were all amazing visually and fun to fight despite the challenge. You won’t be approaching each boss the same way, I found that once you learned the moves and timing, they weren’t so bad. Not easy, but also not frustrating. The only boss that gave me a hard time were the butterflies, but it’s hard to blame them when I kept rolling off the edge. Constantly. When they were almost dead.

Also, no two playthroughs are the same as RNG determines what bosses you’ll fight and what dungeons you come across. So, there’s a decent amount of replayability as you try to discover and unlock everything.

The co-op was smooth and satisfying. We only ran into two bugs, one was visual, the other was audio but neither were game-breaking. The visual bug was that my partner had “waiting for all players” stuck on his screen until he reconnected. The audio bug, I assume an enemy got stuck underneath a dock, so we heard him doing his battle cries, we simply walked away, however, and moved on. My biggest concern was that co-op would trivialize some of the boss fights, that you’d blast through them without breaking a sweat and complete the game in 5 hours. However, this was not the case. We had our fair share of struggles, and both agree that the butterfly fight is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Fun, and very challenging, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. I’ll say the only thing that might bother some people is that you cannot speak to a merchant at the same time as your partner, so while one of you are upgrading your guns and armor the other will have to go restock on ammo boxes, hearts, mods, whatever else you may need and just learn how to rotate them with each other so you’re not awkwardly standing in line waiting your turn.

Remnant is amazing and despite my nitpicking, I thoroughly enjoyed playing it. I’d recommend it to honestly anyone, even people who disliked dark souls or dislike hard games in general. Once you learn the patterns and get the hang of it, it’s pretty addicting and very rewarding. Full price or on sale this game is worth every penny, and you don’t need a buddy to enjoy it I just think they’ll add to the fun.
