You can also go a crystal and wait there but like Souls the enemies will respawn. A little farming never hurts though. :)

It doesn't have a pause cuz the game modes (offline and online) are shared when playing. That's why you can change the lobby on the fly and don't have to quit the game first.
Honestly it's not that much of an issue for me. I kill all the mobs in the vicinity, move back a bit and I can leave for 15 mins without dying. Enemies don't respawn once they're killed, unless you reset them at a checkpoint.
All the DS games behave in the same way btw.
