The game was great no doubt, but the humor definitely took a hit since they didn't have the same writers I think. I do appreciate the more serious direction they went though. Learning about Raz's family and the lore of the world was pretty interesting and I was hella down for it.
I really wish that the side characters had more of a role though. I was eager to get to know the interns and finally fight side by side with Milla and Sasha but nah, Raz pretty much was just running errands by himself for the whole game.
The mental connection ability was also kind of a missed opportunity. It was fun using it to traverse around but I really wanted to mess around with the other characters thoughts. like maybe you associate ideas with each other which causes other thoughts to spawn opening another path. Kinda like we did with Holly but I guess thematically it wouldn't make much sense to do that.
All in all, great game, couldve been even better.
The game itself was good, but not as excellent as the first one.
The price tag of € 60 is just ridiculous, though.
People complaining about the price have the insanity of a manatee.
Everything else was fun but the writing was meh for me sadly. I bought it at pre launch. lol Still worth playing
Later on, the girl with the skate board tells Raz to "remember what I taught you about grinding rails!" and I'm sitting there thinking "you didn't teach me ♥♥♥♥!"
The game also keeps telling me to update my Nvidia drivers, because my current version is known to cause issues. But I just completed the main story a few minutes ago, and I didn't run into any trouble that I was able to recognize.
As for the writing and the humour, I'm afraid it's mostly the product of its time more than anything. They are still good, but very - I dunno - toothless? Apart from a few jabby instances. The first game didn't pull any punches, while here it's much milder and more suitable for the modern audience. The old Double Fine snark still shines here and there, and I guess that's about the most one can hope for these days.
Anyway, I think alot of people remember Nauts 1 with rose tinted glasses. Going back I realized that the first game isn't that much better than the sequel.
You're the hero of the first game, you saved 20 kids and your teachers and stopped a huge disaster. Raz seemed confident, cheerful and cocky.
And then bam,
Psychonauts 2, everybody kinda treats you like ♥♥♥♥ at the start. You get dumped into a new enviroment with characters who are not a fan of raz because they think he is too young.
Its been a while since i've played, but i remember that the interns basically hazed raz and egged him on a few times, the acting boss doesn't like him and you get to meet raz's family, who are also angry with him because he ran away. and mila, coach and sasha kinda ignore you.
The other person from the last game is raz's girlfriend ( forgot her name ) and she is sad because of her dad.
So straight up, its a bunch of negativity right of the bat.
Interns -> unintresting douchebags
Psychonauts employees -> dismissive
family -> angry(ish) / sad
And its a whole lot of raz apologizing, which also brings down the mood.
Then he messes with the boss ladys mind because she was dismissive and wouldn't give him a chance, which makes raz anxious. and then he has to apologize.
And then, you travel through the minds of sad old men/women who have been through a trauma. One was an alcoholic for christ sakes, who lost his lover. 3 levels of fords crullers sad background levels, about the sad thing that happened to him.
the others were also depressing.
And then you get to the big climax of it all, and it turns out that Raz's grandmother is actually Raz's aunt, who was brainwashed into believing she's actually Raz's grandmother because she was basically grulovian hitler, and she killed her own sister ( along with countless others because she was insane ).
Raz saves the day ( together with some help of the boring interns ), but to me it all still seems like a huge bummer.
Loved the gameplay, but the story wasn't as fun. Imho, the first one was more whimsical and light hearted.
