Report a translation problem
First, I'd try launching the game in administrator mode and see if the problem persists. This can solve issues with your peripherals that work but won't work with certain executables. For example if you use another software that uses mic functionalities ( voice chat, recording, voice modification etc. ), it can keep another software from using it. To launch administrator mode, right click on barotrauma.exe in your game folder.
Edit: Oh and... Just to make sure: if the host unchecks voice chat in the settings, voice chat won't work of course, and I believe you won't see your sound meter if you are in the lobby.
Does the game not like if mic is used by other programs?
But since you seem to indicate this is happening only when you join a very specific lobby, I'm really beginning to think this is the result of the lobby's settings, which is on the admin/host's end.
