Its also possible to avoid the creatures by silently floating upwards out of the Abyss.
I definitely remember having a little giggle m8 and deciding to go down down down into the abyss and skirt along the bottom of the cavern to skip an entire round pretty much, expecting us to die from abyssal related natural causes, but nothing showed up. I guess it was luck, as I could see geodes on the sonar as I was zooming along, but we never pissed anything off.
I guess sometimes they're on holiday. Or perhaps they got killed somehow, by magma vents, or just got stuck in the terrain? Presumably they'd still make those giant orange sonar pings if that happened, though.
I've seen Latchers get stuck in terrain more times than I've seen them not, but in their case they can totally cheat-teleport out of it and keep following us anyway, so I dunno.
