Can i refine a gene 3 times, then combine it to increase its quality?

I've been reading how refining and combining works, you can only refine a gene up to 3 times, but is it still possible to combine it with another gene after that?

base game / vanilla. unidentified genetic material can be looted from monsters and found in wrecks or alien ruins. using stabilozine at a research station found in outposts can identify the material into usable genes. genes can be further refined with duplicates for stronger effects or combined with different ones. you need a gene splicer item to install alien genes in someone.

I haven't read anything on the official wiki that says 3 is a hard limit. I'm going for a 100% oxygen not needed. I'm going to be a mother f*, "Mother Golden Hammerhead Tigerthresher Shark" chimera, space alien, animal creature, something something.

Gene refining is only limited by the RNG you get while refining. Now that the medical trait that reduces the chance of tainted doesn't appear to work correctly anymore, the chance of getting to 100% is significantly lower.

I would suggest picking 2 pure genes and sticking with it. My personal choice is Husk + Matriarch, while also having Zealot robe for regeneration. That combo literally allowed me to come back from incapacitated status without outside help, while being in water.
