Public lobbies also have two issues. Either they are full of griefers, or the host is very ban happy due to expecting griefers at any moment and will ban you if they are ever so slightly think you might do something.
The best you can do is to try and find a group here in the Recruiting Crewmates subforum, or the games Discord or other related places. Or as you said, get your friends into the game if you can.
Solo can be also fun, although in my own experience, it can get tedious, as while the AI is capable in many important things, in the rest they are compleatly lacking. Mostly anything outside the ship.
Honestly i'm about to just straight up shoot anyone wearing a clown suit because people who do wear it become extremely wild and crazy and often times very loud as well like they have the mic halfway down their throat.
But yea ill take you guys advice.
You might've thought of this but I believe you're less likely to run into trolls in games with few people.
To answer your question, no, not everyone is trolling, but there are lots of them.
