Can someone explain how gene splicing works?
I believe you find material, take to research station at outpost, refined it, then shove it into your thing you have on your character that holds the dna. I cant seem to find any resources explaining the process on reddit or the wiki

It is exactly that
Genetic material can be found in wrecks and alien ruins. Combining them with staboline or whatever its called at a research station can synthesise it into genes, which you can then put in a gene splicer

Yeah, you pretty much got it. A couple other things, you can combine two of the same genetic material to increase its quality and thus potency, and you can also combine two separate genes into a single item that has the effects of both.

Be wary of the latter, as combinatuon of two genes can add drawbacks to them such as slower speeds

"tainting" can happen with combining two of the same gene as well, it's just a FAR larger chance when combining two different genes. I would highly recommend having that one medic talent that makes tainting genes 75% less likely if you're gonna combine two different genes.

Do the genetics change your character appearence? Like do you astetically grow a beak with the mud raptor dna?

Some genetics, like the mudraptor and spineling ones DO change your visual appearance, but I think those are the only two that do.
