I dont get the electrical engineer
Like I know the point of the game is being kind of hard and unforgiving, but from what i´ve experienced playing electrical eng with friends is that you have NO FUN. Like you just stand there controlling the reactor while your friends are out there having fun without you, IDK maybe there´s an easier way to manage it but I haven´t found it and its sooo tiresome to just manage that ♥♥♥♥.
Oh and I think it has the most boring skill tree of all classes.

Generally I've found the reactor is fairly hands off, just toss a fuel cell or maybe two in there and it'll regulate its own temps. Do take this with a grain of salt as I haven't played in a good while but generally speaking I think something's off since I remember distinctly only touching the reactor occasionally.
Honestly, they should have just merged mechanic and engineer, as they functionally fill the same role for the most part.

You don't have to manage the reactor, just put two or three fuel rods in, start it up and put it on automatic. That's literally it.
If your friends are forcing you to manage the reactor due to power losses its because you don't have enough fuel rods inserted to meet the power demand.

As others have said. The reactor is fairly good at handling it self. If you want to go out and explore then rotate with your crew or just turn off the power and go anyway. The junction boxes will stop taking damage if they are not flooded and not powered.

If you still feel like you have to stay on the reactor know that If the reactor dies every time the captain parks the sub that's something the captain has to do better. Not that you can't fix their reactor abuse if you want to.

And I would probably rank the talent tree a good 3/6 compared to the others. But its not front loaded. You get some good stuff early but most of the good stuff is late game.

i dont know about "slapping 2 or 3 fuelrods in there", i thought most vanilla submarines can only handle 1 fuelrod at the time.
but as KRATOS mentioned, you can put the reactor on 'automatic' and go about tinkering with the sub or you can just turn it off, which in return will also decrease any noises the sub emits, and youre likely to attract less creatures while youre away.
i can be very fun to think about little improvements to the sub, which you could install while theyre on eva, so they dont have to wait on you on the stations. Believe me, the wiring and logiccomponents are pretty easy to understand. once you got the hang of it, the mind starts racing what you could do and then youre free to get complicated with that stuff :D

Engineer is great for people who enjoy keeping things in working order and chilling. Not every job is for every playstyle, but you can still take many liberties in how most missions are approached. If you only look at the "bot roles" of each job, they're all extremely boring and barebones tasks. Talent-wise it's mostly in line with assistant and captain; they all have very "sub-bound" roles and bonuses. Engineer is the one at most comfort inside the submarine, so if you want to get outside for expeditions, play something else.

As an engineer, you have quite a few important jobs.

You keep the reactor operational, and craft the fuel for said reactor. You also manage the battery storage and backups for smoothing charge, including the supercapaitors that are critical for firing weapons.

You maintain the submarine's electrical grid by repairing electrical devices, and build custom circuits for quality of life.

You deal in nuclear weapons technology, such as Depleted Fuel ammunition and cheap nukes. You unlock incredibly useful items like Cargo Scooter, PUCs, etc.

Sure, other classes may have more variety or importance, but Engineer is still a pretty interesting class. Everyone will appreciate you keeping the lights on, will love the Cargo Scooters and PUCs provided, and will fear the nuclear might you bring forward.

The combat tree is ideal for an Eng that wants a more hands-on approach. Ammo crafting, solid gun at the end. One of the trees has some good talents for exploring wrecks and ruins (opening doors and crowbar damage).

Any job being able to level up any skill opens up quite a bit, imho

As others have said, the engineer has important responsibilities to the sub. However, if you feel like you're engaged in too much micro to focus and enjoy on other activities/aspects of your job, maybe your group could enlist a bot/assistant to help keep junction boxes from breaking down or keep the reactor running?

You can be a good generalist as Engineer too, the +100% skill gain helps you flex. Once you have a few talents and sub upgrades you don't have to spend all that much time poking the electronics. And sitting and manning the reactor is a criminal waste of your precious time.

When I play Engineer I feel like it's my duty to 'upgrade' my sub, ever play a workshop sub that has cool features like more efficient auto-reactors, smart auto- airlocks and doors, and other QoL features? Most of those can be built in game, although the server settings may make it hard if it doesn't allow rewiring.

Get creative too, make all the lights change color depending on how flooded the sub is or other crazy stuff. Yes, you don't have to be the Engineer to do all that, but the Engineer is one of the best candidates to stay on the sub during mining missions so you'll have some free time while others are out and about, and it's thematic.

I've never seen anyone do that, control the reactor manually. That would be very stupid, wouldn't it?

nah, it may be tedious, but it works. if one controls it manually, there will be more power (load) available in the grid and youll be able to counter heavy fluctuations faster and more efficient than autocontrol, meaning less brownouts

One thing to note with the reactor is you can control both sliders at the same time. If your mouse is inside the menu you can use the arrow keys to move the sliders. With a talent you can do it from anywhere. Say a bed awhile trying to survive the doctor's help.
