How to use depth charges? Impact fuse only?
I tried throwing a depth charge (loaded witha block of C4) and it just idly slid by the pack of mudraptors with no explosions whatsoever. Did I miss something? Do they not have a proxy fuse?

Like FourGreenFields said, they are impact-detonated, not proximity. Would be nice if such variant existed, but it could be risky as well.

Nuclear decoy might shave off a few plates off an Endworm, but against the other big threats they do relatively little damage, and they come with the added risk of having the creature push or pull your sub into the nuke as well.

On my own gimmick sub which has only single, fixed railgun mount and unswappable dorsal coilguns (you read that right), we still like to use nuclear decoys against Abyss monsters because we're pretty much swimming in Incendium and other materials. But if you can engage downwards more properly, there's no need to bother with depth charges except when you need an actual decoy.

Nuclear decoy has slightly shorter decoy duration for some reason as well.

Regular depth charges with non-nuclear explosives are probably only useful for breaching into wrecks, but you'd need to locate the Thalamus and somehow avoid becoming snared while traversing above it to deliver the payload. Drones or other shuttles with depth charge capability might be able to pull that off better.

They explode on contact, yes. Only really good for enemy subs. Or wrecks/salami, if you have enough time to wait for your "totally not a glorified mine" to float down.

Against creatures you generally want decoys.

I tried dropping a couple of depth charges out of my bottom airlock just to see what would happen, not sure if that works or not (it may just have missed everything on it's slow decent).

I'm pretty sure they need to be primed by the loader and launcher tube. :P
