What makes the largest ships not suitable for small crews?
there is just two of us, so we are only doing the very first ship because the recommended crew size is 1-3.

What makes the larger ships not ideal for just two people? Is it just the size (so time to get from helm to gun, or gun to reactor) or are there other factors in play?

It's also important to consider the amount of things to keep repaired on larger ships, and the space between them for your engineers and mechanics

so its nothing crazy like more monsters or anything?
Nope, it's pretty much the same difficulty creep no matter what Sub you use. But Tier 1 subs cannot upgrade their Hulls passed a given point, which prevents continuing because of the Depth limit of the Hull, and harder critters rip through the hull faster.

I play with 1-2 others, we supplement with Bots in roles we aren't playing. But in my experience, getting between 7-10 bots makes the Hosting player fairly laggy in moderate to intense situations.

Imagine you set off a nuke in your sub. Think on how long it would take to repair all the hulls. And to fix all the junction boxes. Now sprinkle in a bit of chaos that multiplies the added work required. Larger subs are mostly so larger crews have enough stuff to do.

You can beat the game in any vanilla sub. As talents let you get away with a lot. So feel free to pick your favorite.

excellent. If its just that we can deal with that, we just didnt want to start a large sub and then find out it throws like 5 times the enemies at us lol ty

are there any higher tier subs that are suitable for 2 players? MAYBE 1 to 2 bots if required but ideally just two player?

Azimuth is a Tier 2 Scout, Recommends 3-5. Or the Typhon 2, Tier 3 Attack, Recommends 4-9 (Has 5 Turrets).

Either one, would be ideal to nab 1 or 2 decent stat Assistants.
I wouldn't recommend anything beyond the dugong for 2 players. The main issue with larger subs for smaller crews is that it can take 3-4 times longer to navigate from one end of the sub to the other.

You aren't likely to be able to complete the game with 2 players, and while 2 bots will help you'll probably want them in bodyarmour and ballistic helmets with husk / husk genes to keep them relatively pressure safe.

If you want to play with a very small crew set the game to easy and use every advantage it gives you.

Considering the usage of bots, I would say from my personal experiences, that it gets boring very quick. Yes, you can control the bots to an extent where a ship of a large size can become managable. But with size comes also power. And that power is often superior to smaller ships. You will get less of a challenge suitable for just the two of you.

If you are bored by the classic ships from the default selection, I strongly recommend for the two of you to give the ship editor a go. Sometimes it suffes to adjust a ship you like and fitting for 2-4 or 3-6, that you can enjoy them with a party of two very well in a long lasting campaign.

"Either one, would be ideal to nab 1 or 2 decent stat Assistants." Does this mean grab 2 assistant bots or are you saying we should be two assistants?

it's not that we are bored with the ships, we are still new. Im just not looking forward to not being able to complete the game if there is just two of us on the smaller ships

I don't know why people are giving you bad advice. As I said earlier you can beat the campaign with any sub. Even if some of them make things harder than they need to be. You will fail before you succeed.
Using the talent system the mechanic has a talent that allows you to buy all the upgrades you need to complete the game. After you buy the upgrades you can even get rid of the mechanic. I've personally beaten the game with 2 person crews.

"I don't know why people are giving you bad advice. As I said earlier you can beat the campaign with any sub." No offense but how do i know your advice is the advice i should be listening to? What if their advice is right and yours is the bad advice but you're like a god tier player so its actually possible for you?

Maybe bad was too strong of a word. But that is what I wanted to avoid. A fear that 2 players is too hard for the average player. Or that you have to get the big subs to play the game.

But you don't know any of that. What I would say is that someone who is familiar with playing games at a casual level is more than good enough to beat the game. That does not mean they will do it their first try. They will restart the round quite a few times.

Perhaps an example. Previously the game was played without the talent system. The difficulty was relatively similar to how it is today. But now with talents and other newer buffs to the player the game is easier than it has ever been. The most recent update is probably the only notable debuff to this.

If that isn't enough for you there are some server settings to make the game easier. With more most likely coming in near future updates. And as others have said you could always pick up a couple of ai crew members.
