You do not need to go down the Church of the Husk line to become a symbiote, you can do so via he Church of the Husk though all you need is a medical doctor (does not need to be a doctor but it is better if done by one), some unidentified genetic material, a gene splicer (one for each person) and a bit of luck with what the genes turn out to be once you refine them.
NPCs do not give a ♥♥♥♥ nor does your crew but you cannot order the crew around anymore cause you cannot speak (you can take some Calyxanide to cure the infection if required to speak but you'll need to reinfect yourself).
And yeah for the most part it is worth it, but not being able to order your NPCs or use in game chat is a pain.
ALSO do NOT go outside the submarine to test your genes or whatever sybiosis method you have used until the tentacle comes out of your mouth, otherwise you will die how you would normally as you only get the perks once the tentacle comes out (final stage of infection before turning).
Husk symbiosis does not prevent you from speaking and has literally no downside. It is a quest reward for finishing the cult's questline, and also provides improved regeneration, similar to the highest quality Hammerhead Matriarch genes.
To answer your question, NPCs will not be hostile in stations, and will not notice. Your crew NPCs, however, have weird AI when they're symbiotic. I have noticed them not firing at husks anymore, which can allow them to get on board the ship. If your whole crew is immune, that's not really a big deal.
Husk creatures still become hostile, if you attack them. And using husk stinger still counts as attack for outpost security.
And you may still need PUCS, as regeneration doesn't heal burns and doesn't heal infected wounds. Regeneration also doesn't help, if you take 200+ damage in one hit, so you still need some protective clothing on top of Zealot robes, that further enhance your regenerative abilities.
In short its same as being willfully husked , but you can still speak , and you dont need to manage anything via genes or clothes or meds. Outposts don't care. It's also 'embedded' in your character, so it can't be healed (which is good offcourse).
One caveat tho , if you die , you will loose it.
Important tip- When you finish the final mission amd come back to the outpost that has the husk faction the ritual will be ready. If you have ai crew make sure everyone is on follow in the sub, then goto the room and do not enter until all your npcs are right behind you. Then talk to the quest giver to recieve symb. Otherwise you can easily breathe all the o2 out of the room and all your npcs will run off for suits an Im not sure if they will get symb if they are not in the room with you.
They don't. NPC will ask, if all your crew is in room, before beginning ritual.
I kind of wish clowns had something similar as final reward too. Especially since clowns, in my opinion, demand a lot more, like whacking abyssal monster with toy hammer, or finding rare clown outfit, that sometimes spawns in wrecks.
Often I see wrecks without any clown corpses at all.
