How to kill the Thalamus?
Hi guys, first time posting on the forum here.

I started playing the game with a couple of friends tonight, and as our second mission we decided on "Salvage a Wreck". We found the wreckage quickly enough, and after after some trial and error got into the wreckage to find the Captain's log.
The mission itself is not the problem here, but we found a Thalamus inhabiting the ship, but for some reason we could not damage it. I scoured the wiki, reddit, this steam forum and the barotrauma forum on their host site, but couldn't find a more detailed description than "kill the brain".

The point is: with the weapons my divers had, they simply couldn't make a dent in it. One diver reported sounds like two pieces of metal clanging together when he shot his SMG, but nothing seemed to happen.
Are there any weapons that work on the brain? We tried the SMG, shotgun and the knives (not sure about the last one). The divers dropped their harpoon gun on the first mission, so that was not an option for us.

We're probably going to take a full arsenal of weapons with us next time, but I'd love to hear from some more experienced players on what to do. We haven't been able to figure it out yet.

Thanks in advance!

The plasma cutter is your friend. :lunar2020contentgoat:

Yea, plasma Cutter, have a friend to deal with any possible Leykocytes, then kill the ammo organs of the weapons. Then its careful movement and killing the leykocyte spawner and etc organs until you find the brain (which kills everything Thalamus in the wreck when dealt with)

Other option: stock up on Nuclear Railgun shells, they absolutely destroy all the walls, but don't harm the Thalamus, usually 1 or 2 are enough to de-shell the whole wreck and then you can use scooter to zoom around and go for the brain. Once you find the brain, I suggest use SMG for ease of reload if you miss your shots and be security for the better weapon skills.

Enter the sub & kill the brain, use your sub weapons to attack the brain at random.

To divert confusion with going into Thalamus infested submarines, you should familiarize yourself with all the default subs as they are all susceptible of becoming such. After that, pretty much anyone else will say to stock up on weapons and a plasma cutter.

FYI, the submarine you just destroyed still functions as a sunken sub, and can still be looted for valuables you may need.

Do you have any mods? Into the Abyss for example makes Thalamus brain invulnerable to any weapon except for explosives such as UEX and C4

my go to is to have me and a buddy, one of us plasmacutters through walls/doors and the other has their weapon of choice to kill the leucytes(the green cells floating around). I usually stab the brain to death with a knife, if you aren't having luck with ANY weapons and you are trying to damage the brain there may be something really wrong with your game, or as ^ said you might have mods.

Thank you so much for the responses!

Other than some subs from the steam workshop, I don't use any mods.

We didn't enter a Thalamus-infected sub this time, but passed one briefly and the plasma cutters were a godsend for the tentacles.

As some comments mentioned the use of the coil- or railguns, that didn't work for us that time (we destroyed the hull where the brain was located, but I shot a teammate in the head instead...)
Our game was probably bugged as this is still in early access, but all this advice was all very helpful!

From all this info I can gather the following info: generally speaking you should be able to kill most the Thalamus with a weapon of your choosing except for the tentacles of the flesh guns.

It seems like my game session was just a bit scrambled.

Once again thanks for the advice! I'll tell my shipmates what they should do next time.
