So is this an actual game yet?
Or just another one of those "we're calling it a release because people stopped buying EA titles" things? Like so many games have been doing recently.

Well, they did add an actual ending to the campaign, that is like 2-3 hours long from what I've read, "testing the skills you and your crew have acquired throughout your journey", also overhauls to the factions and adding more content and story missions. Compared to what it was before, this did become an actual game.

How long is the campaign in total?

Depends on your playstyle, it can be somewhere between 50-100 hours or even more, if you decide to explore everything, do every quest you get and backtrack alot.

This is the case where it's always been a game; most updates were simply more content under a solid framework they made.

The release added an ending to the campaign sequence, which is the most difficult setting in the game, and it's fitting for the 1.0 release.

Following the notes in other threads, do not consider calculating anything campaign for a good while. It takes very long, as stated, even if you know what to do.

It's a mode that ties every mechanic in the game together, so if you jump straight into it you'll be overwhelmed and get frustrated quite easily.

So the story/campaign isnt where i start as a total beginner? I want to coop with friends and finish the campaign. We are all new. Bad idea?

I'd argue the campaign itself is really bad for beginners, yes.

What you can do is host games and play Mission mode to get acquainted; you can try each mission type individually, and trying different ships, you can even add equipment in settings to try them out. Missions vary a lot in their category, so you're not "spoiling" anything; a Salvage mission for instance can be retrieving an object in a small vessel or from a huge wrecked ship with beasts in it, or from a trapped dungeon.

The campaign is basically sequences of those Missions, with persistent resource management, and additional difficulty from both increasing Pressure and maybe the death wave (Jovian Radiation) if you have that enabled. If that's not clear yet, it's very difficult and demanding.

If one does not know what the missions are, and does not know what the resources do, they will easily be overwhelmed and make mistakes that cannot be easily fixed in Campaign. This can be extremely demotivating for new players. So, learning the missions and jobs first in a more relaxed mode then jumping to campaign in order to apply that knowledge is the better way to go about it.

One mission I always start new players with is the "Beacon": Your crew needs to navigate to an abandoned outpost, fix it, enable the beacon, then exit the level to beat it. This is considered a side objective in the campaign but it involves a lot of shenanigans.

campaign still sucks like it always did

stick with multiplayer until like 1.2 or 1.3 comes out

probably because the game was made with multiplayer in mind and playing single player was just an option for those who dont have people to play with

Games like this are made for multiplayer, less singleplayer and campaign, na, I've bought it because I like the gameplay and thats all, without a big goal.

thought you couldnt backtrack much due to the encroaching radiation? unless you turn it off ig

Its a proper game, no doubt. The dev team is rather skilled and competent, but the team is small.

You'd think now that the game is out of early access they would be full steam ahead with bug squashing and customer support, lol guess again.

Customer support is virtually non existent. The publisher will tell you its all on the developers shoulders, but any presence on this forum is rare, you have to join the discord for actual help, but then when you join the discord, one lone single volunteer discord user has been the only person interacting with customers for the past month at least.

Mind you, the game is pretty light weight so you really shouldn't have any issues, but if you ever do run into any issues god help you. You have to sign up on a third party bug report sight for anyone to even give you the time of day.

tbh you can play multiplayer as all first timers and have fun with it, just be prepared to have things go wrong at times or fail your first campaign or two early on. I did this with a group of 2-3 friends and we honestly had a blast with the campaign going in blind/new. You make mistakes, get into way too much trouble and show up underprepared for many things, but barotrauma to me is at its finest when everything has that "oh ♥♥♥♥ what just happened" feeling, and you get that the most in your first playthroughs.

I would suggest turning off jovian radiation. It forces you to progress at a steady pace with minimal/no back tracking and is honestly not that fun a mechanic (especially for starting out/learning) unless you decide you want a less laid back experience and more challenge. for a first time though I feel like radiation will just put too much pressure on trying to learn mechanics and feel your way through missions.
