Use them for what they're good for pal. They do not seem to make good captains, but they make for passing gunners & can manage repairs in a passable fashion. I've had some success with the smaller subs and AI.

id also say that if its specifically for you leaving the ship your better off just setting it to autopilot hold position.

The ai is decent at most simple tasks like gunnery/repairing etc. they dont make good pilots.

I agree the game is certainly unenjoyable solo, and borders on unplayable. I was saddened to see the focus on the 1.0 update was on anything other than making a robust AI capable of serving as a worthy crew and making playing solo somewhat fun. Does not seem like that will be forthcoming now, so paradoxically this release of 1.0 feels more like an end to the games potential rather than a beginning.

Oh well. The game came close but ultimate a few key decisions lead to a dropped ball. Perhaps in the future the developer or someone else will do the idea greater justice.

Flooding, currents (not in the first biome, so unlikely), or you forgot to set the autopilot to keep position.

The game is absolutely playable in SP, and arguably enjoyable. But you're the only one with a brain, so you have to do a lot of stuff yourself (steering, anything involving EVA, crafting...).

It's more like loaning your car to your brother, and it comes back in a box.

Probably start by learning game mechanics. and then work the bots around it

For me, the most worrying thing, while be out of the sub, is if something attacks it and gets in while your not there. Best to keep the command tab open and is you see your bots trying to repair the hull. you know exactly whats happening.

Also, keep the sonar off while stationary. It helps reduced being attacked.

You dont need the bots to drive the sub, its more a commodity. You can just leave auto pilot on and hold position.

Maybe all Barotrauma truly needed for an update is the Darkest Dungeon startup screen where it tells you explicitly that you will be destroyed.

One thing that game doesn't tell you, when you Host a game you can set it to private and pick missions

Well as other have already said, use the bots for repair ♥♥♥♥♥ and gunned down monsters.

Helm, Crafting, EVA/Indoor firefight hell even medication should/must be handle by player, otherwise you gonna have a bad time.

In a perfect world the dev would have program a competent bots for us, but this...is not a perfect world lol, so you will have to adapt your playstyle to accommodate the bots instead of them accommodate you.
