I was playing a campaign with two other people on the Humpback. we have already played and were able to cooperate, solving various problems (before that, we were engaged in missions, sometimes 4-6 people, we started the campaign in the same amount, but in the end we finished (major part) the three of us).
we passed the campaign except for the last level - the immersion depth of the sub didn't allow. but we killed Doomworm, despite the constant flooding.
The biggest drawbacks of the bots right now are that bots don't usually handle intruders well, as intruders tend to be accompanied by lots of water, water stun, and melee-stun attacks by intruders while the bots are worried about pressure and drowning -- they just can't prioritize and react to complex situations well. That said, bots can no-brain run around the ship and repair items and fix leaks like professionals, usually, and in the general course of events having a bot repair team will make your general gameplay feel super smooth.
Bots also don't deal with leaving the sub very well -- they can get caught swimming out into open ocean when on 'follow me' orders when you leave the sub, like, instead of following you they just path out into nowhere and swim 100-200m away from you before turning back.
There is something to be said for larger multiplayer games where you can get a crew of 5-6 people diving for missions. Also, generally, this is entirely unnecessary. One or two well equipped and informed people should be able to complete any mission, but everyone has bad days (or unlucky days) so expect to hit the ole 'retry mission' button at least a few times during the course of any campaign.
Take as many people as you feel comfortable with.
If you know your way around, 3 can be enough.
