Within a short time-frame? Yes. Enough to cause some flooding? Yes. If there's a group of them? Yes.
I started a new campaign after the 0.18.12 update, the Humpback has double skins in several places so is a good choice to give you that extra bit of time to kill them before the sub takes serious damage. They will still get in, hammerheads and other large enemies will cause considerable damage with each strike, but once you get a few hull upgrades done it becomes less of a problem.
A vanilla sub with a single skinned hull would leak much quicker, requiring you to tactfully manoeuvre where possible to despatch the enemies as quickly as possible, and be prepared for flooding and intruders.
I suggest at least 2 hull upgrades per biome to keep a good pace. You will need this anyways to advance.
Do more expensive ships have a better hull (HP wise) or it's all the same?
No, more expensive ships don't have more hull HP. (Deepdivers have greater crush depth, but that does not affect HP).
No, it's not all the same. Can be changed in the subeditor.
I have the vanilla Humpback with about the same hull upgrade level, I've mostly been encountering crawlers and the occasional mud raptor in the first biome, the crawlers tend to run away if shot at by my coilgun gunners before coming in again or going for a dead crawler to feed. I saved up some marks and bought a second coilgun for the top left position, giving me more tactical options to get two guns on the swarms and other enemies. It's important to give your gunners the best possible firing position, don't be afraid to back off if the monsters are attacking the hull directly (use manual control to get fast acceleration and top speed).
Going to the bottom isn't entirely a hull issue.
Upgrading pumps, rewiring/upgrading for a stable flow of energy, proper damage control (Hull, Pumps, and Energy in that order). These things are all help keep the water out of your boat.
If you're really, really, really having trouble, or are playing entirely solo, I would suggest trading the Humpback for an Orca and learn to use Decoy Depth Charges. Those things work miracles.
alone is impossible or at least a massive pain in the butt
bots lag the game and are only semi useful long term and for expeditions forget it
Randoms can be hard to find a good crew.
If its randoms try enforcing certain things on the sub. I would usually have everyone repair, security on guns and enough mechs and electricians to keep things running and hulls must be repaired quick.
The captain needs to call out constantly on where the hull is being attacked so people can repair it and guns can focus.
If even a few people just do nothing or do their own thing the entire sub is put in jeopardy which is usually the biggest problem not counting trolls.
a good serious campaign has mostly the captain talking on general chat while everyone else is listening and maintaining the sub to keep everything running smoothly
