Mechanic fixes pumps, engines, reactors and the hull. He also crafts most of the items at the constructor.
Engineer is considered an entry level job to playing the game. They're almost always in the sub to fix all systems and leaks, keep fuel in the reactor and not blow it up, and as well shoot and reload the sub guns as long as they aren't all taken by Security. Pretty easy to play and you get some shooting action! Almost no one wants to play this job as their first pick, since every other jobs can do the same thing. Electrical skill itself doesn't really offer anything other than faster fixing. Every game wants one though so that other jobs can do their jobs.
Mechanics are your quartermasters, recycling and resupplying the sub of missing items and ammunitions, improving quality of life via items. They are also better at welding damages, mining and cutting through ruins, using less fuel than everyone else. Otherwise they also run around and fix things. Harder to play if you're not the type that cares about the entire sub inventory. Most important job in Campaign mode, demotivating to play when sessions are short, less useful in Mission mode. Substitutes for Engineers but better with crafting abilities.
