Once you have picked all of the talents from a particular tree then you get an achievement or something, or an unique item that cannot be crafted (so you'd better look after it!)
Like someone else suggested, there are talents that provide bonus XP but those talents become effectively worthless once you've gone down each tree, so there should just be a flat XP bar (I dunno, 5000 XP or something) that when you fill up grants you an item like a Commendation or something that can be sold for money or used for some kind of thing, dunno what. A small and useful bonus that isn't too reliable, but definitely appreciated. The XP bar can be filled up multiple times to make sure the XP gains are still being useful in a long campaign, of course.
Make it like a trophy shaped like the T in the Barotrauma logo and when you use it it's consumed, and you raise the natural skill cap of all your skills by +5 or something. Sounds good maybe?
Or they could be broken down into a unique material and used to craft something cool, I dunno. Or placed around the ship as decoration. Or put into rail gun shells and fired at Endworms to tame them, I don't know lol.
Or hell let it spawn a loot box, literally just a crate with a ribbon around it that contains a random item from a huge pool of items, as a laugh. It could be something as boring as a tool belt or a wrench, or it could be an alien power cell, or whatever. Maybe with some unique stuff like fancy rainbow glowsticks, or a special pet egg. Maybe make it a joke about crappy MTX practices with lootboxes in those games, I dunno. Maybe that's too whacky.
Of course, they could just add even more talents, a huge variety of them to spend points on, as well as letting them have levels from 1>2>3 or something to upgrade them, costing 1, 2, and 3 talent points to upgrade, which would act as a suitable sponge for sucking up excess talent points too, right?
You'd have to burn 2 Talent points to earn a Spec Point, but that Spec Point could be used for a Talent that was locked off by a previous selection. To balance it out, you could only ever get 2 Specialization Points to spend back into yourself. Either that or just 1.
The idea is that, some Talent decisions are a bit tough to make (personally, at least) and Specialization lets you go back on that tough choice and get the other thing that you think would have been just as helpful as the other. It isn't perfect, though, a lot of balance shaking when it comes to getting something that should have stayed locked.
