You do not need friends to enjoy the multiplayer, in fact I have made more friends from the multiplayer in this game than any other game.

I've played multiplayer exclusively with random people and had little to no problems.

It all depends on the host.

If in doubt, host a lobby yourself or ask a host what the ground rules are when joining a lobby, so you know what you are getting into.

There are as many people looking for serious lobbies as there are people looking for traitorous lobbies.

Favorite servers that you enjoy and look out for them! It's the best way!

TLDR

The game has a diverse and inviting community, look for new player friendly lobbies!

I have put most of my in-game time to random multi-player, a good way to make and find friends once you get used to it more.
wat do you even mean. bro .
Much of the public multiplayer community is a toxic stew. You can play this multiplayer without friends, just be aware that you're going to be griefed incessantly, and that you will have to host your own games. Griefers will conspire to convince game hosts to ban you for laughs - that is the 'end game' content for that segment of the communtiy.

It's a fun game system and the devs are doing a fine job with it, but it suffers from the fact that it is a great multiplayer game to play with other people, and more and more these days people make a game out of playing in bad faith for the purpose of ruining games for others.
The best way to prevent griefers is to not play on big servers. I sometimes host a server called caves and thalami. In that server there is always a max of 7 players. Haven't seen a single griefer in that server yet. Works really well and is also very fun. :barotrauma:
Climb man, join the discord, try different servers. there are lots of good ones out there. Try the 'Serious' filter and looking for smaller crews. Look for titles that imply a focus on the campaign.

I'm going to be honest I really love this game and know that griefing is a problem for a lot of new players, but there are a lot of good players and good servers out there and the game just isn't as fun without them.

EDIT: Yall are welcome to add me, I hop on regularly to host a campaign progression on different ships. We are currently on the Berilia.

It's not as hard to avoid griefers as some people make it out to be. If you see a server with a serious name and a reasonable amount of player slots for the sub and the description threatens that trolls will not be tolerated, then any trolls will typically be dealt with quickly. If you see a server with an immature name and an immature description and they've got 14 people on a sub meant for 5, you're gonna have a bad time.

I disagree with the group number if your planning to do campaign and are moving up it prolly wont take that long to get better subs. Same with the naming, the names does not effect the number or amount of greifing.

I think what Samael is getting at is that the title of the lobby is often a reflection of the hosts maturity.

For example if you go into a lobby titled "Dookey" you shouldn't expect much... but something like "New Campaign" implies a potentially better lobby.

He also mentions the # of players vs sub recommended number. I strongly suggest focusing on lobbies between 6-8 players. 10 is managable with a good host.
I normally hear 6 players as highest recommended with a short range of 4-8.
