The single player campaign goal is, I suppose, to make it to the end (which hasn't been fully written yet as the game is still in development) at the right side of the map. You can take missions from any outpost, arrive at the destination outpost to claim your rewards, then take more missions and go back to the first outpost if you like, where there will likely be more missions. I'm not 100% sure but I think one can probably go back and forth like this indefinitely in single player campaign (useful for upgrading your sub and hiring crew in the early game). This may change as development continues, in multiplayer campaign a radiation sweeps across the map from the left and is pretty nasty so one has to keep moving forwards.
If the sub is lost completely (all crew dead) then the current 'round' can be restarted from the last station or area you visited (sometimes there isn't a station), the game saves when you begin a mission so don't spend time sorting things out (e.g. manufacturing, unless you really need it for the mission) at the start of a round, leave that until you are docked again, if you save and quit while docked anything you did while docked will also be saved, this is the best time to tidy up the sub etc. Turn off the reactor to save fuel, the sub will run off the station's power. You can restart a round anytime as well from the menu (shown by pressing ESC) but I prefer to take losses on the chin, sometimes I've lost several crewmen (some quite experienced) but I just hired replacements the next time I could afford it. Look after your crew, their experience is worth hanging on to; assistants are cheap and gain experience fast, but they are currently always assistants regardless of how much experience they gain, I prefer to have crewmen with actual proper roles.
Bonus info: if you design or modify a sub in the sub editor and tick the box to make it available in the game, you can buy it for the set price during your single player campaign! Consider it something you've commissioned an engineer to do, the payment is for their services. I modified the Humpback to get rid of several bugbears I had with the default layout and design, and also added quite a bit of custom circuitry and other bits and pieces, but I left the actual submarine hardware standard so that it wouldn't make things too easy. I test my creations extensively in multiplayer missions (set the host to private and just add a few bots) and also with other people to get feedback and see how they use the boat, if something's bad they will usually moan about it!
Both singleplayer and multiplayer have this option, it is called Jovian Radiation.
Ohh, I wasn't sure what that was, must have turned it on by mistake.
