A good reason for bad reputation?

Is there any reason having a bad reputation would be a good thing to have? Like is there a reward such as money or discounts at certain places.

I think probably only for roleplay purposes - become a badass and shoot your way through the game! Doubt it would get you very far though if you can't buy upgrades and such.

Currently, there are no upsides to having bad reputation, (other than being able to loot the people you have to kill when you dock because of such reputation). I'd recommend keeping your reputation with factions positive, since there are only benefits to positive reputations with any/all of said factions.

Also, I believe there's a certain point in the game where you need a high enough reputation with a certain faction in order to pass.

It's either that, or pay ludicrous amounts of (in-game) money.
