Subs not selectable in singleplayer new-game.
Now while I will say, I *do* know if you buy a submarine after selecting the dudong first, you can swap to it mid-campaign, however, even after doing that, none of the ships seem to "unlock" for new game, is the dudong the only allowed playthrough from the start?

Each sub you buy is only useable for that campaign, they do not carry forward to another campaign game.
You can only start a campaign with a sub which is at most the price of the dugong (i believe 6,000 mks?). Therefore the only vanilla sub you can start a campaign in is the dugong.
You purchase subs, not unlock them.

Sounds strange being the subs are highlighted in red, are remain in the main menu as if you can do something with them.

Had a similar issue after editing subs, but it turns out the sub's worth is so much that it prevents you to use it as a starting sub in single player.

Sounds kind of unnecessary to put them on the list of SP ships then.
dumb AF if you can only pick the dugong then why have list of other subs that you can't pick. Refunding this POS

Now thats a little more unnecessary, at the very least i'd give the game a chance in what it has in mind, being dudong is your main sub.

The dugong is the starting vanilla sub, but you can install any other subs or make your own. You can't start with a sub worth more than a certain amount because it would ruin progression. So if you use submarines from the workshop and/or made by other players you will be restricted to smaller ones. If you just want to use whatever sub you want then do sandbox or a normal mission instead of campaign.

if you are really impatient and don't want to earn better subs the intended way you can cheat for money by pressing F3 and typing
money 20000
then press enter.

I think if you host multiplayer you can start with any submarine, but in multi you can't switch control between crew.

Total cost of subs is based on the supplies they start with, how big they are and how much machinery they have.

Ya the hard limit seems to be 6k marks when you pick your starting sub for campaign in SP. The menu is there for any workshop subs you download that also are cheap enough to start with as well as see which subs you'll be able to purchase during the campaign I imagine.

Can always lower the prices of the vanilla subs in the sub editor as well if you wanted to start with a different sub in SP. MP allows you to start with whatever sub you want so could go that route as well and play alone in your own server.

the sub i created wont drop below a price of 10165 when i try to lower it in Save function. Is there any other way to lower it to 0 like some of the other custom subs i've seen?

You will need to reduce the amount of equipment in the sub. The base price is set by items inside/size of sub.

Think of it as a list of campaign compaitible subs, you can switch later on.
Starter sub can be only up to 6000 cost.
