You can only start a campaign with a sub which is at most the price of the dugong (i believe 6,000 mks?). Therefore the only vanilla sub you can start a campaign in is the dugong.
You purchase subs, not unlock them.
if you are really impatient and don't want to earn better subs the intended way you can cheat for money by pressing F3 and typing then press enter.
I think if you host multiplayer you can start with any submarine, but in multi you can't switch control between crew.
Total cost of subs is based on the supplies they start with, how big they are and how much machinery they have.
Can always lower the prices of the vanilla subs in the sub editor as well if you wanted to start with a different sub in SP. MP allows you to start with whatever sub you want so could go that route as well and play alone in your own server.
You will need to reduce the amount of equipment in the sub. The base price is set by items inside/size of sub.
Starter sub can be only up to 6000 cost.
