Yes, we know the controls and how to operate the sub. It's the enemies what are crushing us
Also, unless there's no ice beneath you you can allways just... sink. Until you hit the ground. And then deal with the hostile, patch up the submarine, and keep going.
Though you should have at least 1 NPC manning the guns, while one of you two concentrates on repairing equipment. Also, if a monster attacks your uncovered side, use that electric discharge-thingy. It stuns monsters to buy you time to line up for a better shot.
The SP-campaign, as mentioned, starts out with a perfectly fine crew. It involves some managing though as the mechanic and engineer will have to work double-duty. The engineer will also fix electric equipment while leaving the reactor in automatic-mode, and the mechanic will repair mechanical stuff and man the guns. Small leaks can be ignored until the monsters are dead and the Dugong is slow and nimble enough to allow the captain to help in a hurry.
It would be nice to know what classes you're playing as currently. If your starting composition is, frankly, bad, like a medic and security officer, then I simply suggest a restart until you have the crew from SP-mode.
I'd like to see additional system for training crew members, like a school system you pay for or something like books you can buy to not have to get shocked few bilion times until your skill is high enough to have a somewhat decent skill lvl.
P.s.
Most vanilla subs are quite hard to manage for newer players, are you using a custom made or vanilla sub ?
The problem of the game it's not the difficulty, it's the learning curve. It doesn't explain what to do in a crisis management and it doesn´t allow time to learn it throught experimentation of two newbies. Two newbies in this game, but we have completed a lot of other complex games like Dark Souls, Factorio, Space Chem, Arma 3 campaing, built an interplanetary ship from scrach on Space Engineers, etc... to name games from different generes
The 0% difficulty campaing (i Insist: not any campaing: the 0% campaing) should be more permisive to allow to learn the basics. I think that restric the progression in that camping, or allow ir only in the first zones of the map it's a fair trade off
