3 man group is good?

Me and friends thought of playing this game, is playing it as 3 man good enough or do I need more?

~90% of my playtime has been singleplayer so far, but I think 3-5 friends (or friendly strangers) is probably the ideal number of players.

From my time so far, yeah, 3 is enough to get just about any job done. There isn't much room for fatal mistakes, but I think that just adds to the tension in a good way. After about 5-6, you'd need to start playing on the truly massive subs to keep the crew busy. Idle hands turn to Sin.

and what about a duo, would it be good?

Two is still pretty good, but you'll probably want to bring some bots with you in order to keep up with all the sub repairs. Also, venturing outside the sub with only two people might be a little tricky. Of course, most missions don't require you to do that.
