Having to port forwards is disappointing
It's current year for god's sake, most other new-ish games like risk of rain 2 and such don't require you to fiddle with your router to work.
I don't care for the price point really, but I don't have access to my router so hosting is off the table for me and many others. Gonna take it off the wishlist for now...

NAT punchthrough (which is what your all wanting here) is not something you simply code or add, it requires a server to bridge the gap in communication and connect two separate connections and manage the connection for you.

During the testing phase and just before release (in a matter of days really) they wanted this as a feature and want to look into it so its probably being added sooner than later.

Steam has the ability to handle this I think but they would need to learn how its done if it is, if not then they need to pay for servers to make it possible and look up how that is handled correctly.

I suspect it will have NAT Punchthrough in the coming weeks, once they've had the chance to adjust post-release into EA. they still need to get a steamCMD variant of the server released (I believe that is next patch?) so you can host the server without a steam client running on the same machine.

Obviously - they can't just send all your data of every server (Practically hosting it all themselves), that'd cause crazy networking latencies even, it needs to be handled properly that does mean changing their networking just a little to make it possible so it'l take a little time.

Before launch, I don't think it was possible for them to have implemented this as well (I don't know the specifics). If it was so simple most games would have it, in my experience almost all my titles don't except some really big studio ones, assuming they don't just host the servers themselves. many of my favourite sandbox and shooter games require port forwarding (I can't think of any I hosted that did not).

The developers are actually pretty aware not everyone is capable of port forwarding (sometimes it being even impossible instead of just not knowing how to) so they will probably try to look into this when they can I imagine.

I would rather use port forwarding over steam servers by far

Depends on your provider and the associated router software.

As above said, it's easiness varies. I believe one provider doesn't even allow you to port forward.

Read above, the process isn't consist across all providers and software. It's more difficult on some, and maybe even impossible on others. Either way, it's inconvenient.

NAT Punchthrough is a WIP at the moment. Devs are trying to figure out how to get steam to work with it.

Sad. Port forwarding is easy, too bad your access is an issue there.

Telekom doesnt provide proper port forwarding solutions for a lot of their routers.
Just one example of many large scale providers.
