Knowlege index

When in the research menu you have a "knowlege index" to the left of the ammount for the in queue researches. What exactly does that mean and does it do anything like faster research?

As far as I understand, that is simply your "position" world wide. If you have a Knowledge Index of 20, press A to open the Regional Atlas. Click on Page 5, click on Research Score icon. If you count down the list of nations, yours should be the 20th.


Tidbit which I do not think is known by many; If you have Research Facilities which are not in use, the idle ones will contribute to the speed of the ones in use.

How much do they contribute? I thought it was just 1 slot = 1 research facility?

Over all it is better to use 1 for 1, but if you want to speed a particular tech, you can add it and leave a few slots empty. It is not worthwhile to to that constantly as it becomes a numbers game. Would you rather have 10 techs now or 1 faster? If used sparingly it makes a difference. I do not know the percentages.
