If you've not done the merchant quest yet (when unlocking the garden) you can him about seeds, he'll offer you a loan. Farming is actually quite a good way of making money early game, Buy seeds from the farmer, the sell the produce back to him, and pick up a few extra seeds with any profit. You'll have made enough to repay the loan in no-time.
The second way is with sermons which gives quite a lot more silver, but can only be done once a week on the purple pride day. It doesn't require anything other than a starting prayer that the bishop gives you.
Also, get a teleportstone from the inn as quickly as you can. It's so helpful.
If you want money before that and is right at the start. Just go and get the refugee camp by becoming a cleric, and then find the quarry towards the north west corner of the map. There you can mine coal and sell it to the blacksmith in town. It will not give you much as the blacksmith have limited amount of money. But it is at least a start.
For future reference, the higher your graveyard skull rating, the more money you get - the number of church-goers mainly effects faith gain and how successful the sermon is, not total church donations.
Once you get enough silver for another whetstone, I recommend progressing the Inquisitor's quest line until you get access to the vineyards, buy some grape seeds from your merchant friend, then start making wine (don't forget to use Peat from the compost pile and Boost fertilizer to increase your yield).
If you haven't unlocked alchemy yet to make the potion ingredients for fertilizer, search the swamps to the weest until you find the Witch - starting her quest line will unlock potion making in the tech tree.
Bronze and silver quality wine can be sold at the Dead Horse, bu gold quality wine can only be sold to the merchant.
-Just be aware that unlocking the entire wine-making tech tree will cost quite a bit of blue science points, but once you do you'll be making money hand-over-fist.
Once you have enough capital, progress the Merchant quest line and get the Trade License from the kingdom mailbox by the church, and you can start selling all sorts of stuff by the crate-load.
Oh yeah and minor spoilers, but you'll want to progress Snake's quest so you can get access to the back area of your cellar - that's how you get zombie workers.
