Other than open quests, can you still work on your graveyard, your tavern and so on?
The literal end goal of the game since day one was known to you: get back to your wife who's in your original world. You knew what the ending was supposed to be since you started the very first opening cutscene.
But I will agree they could've added something a bit bonus for reaching the ending.
Let's be realistic. Like ultra realistic.
Would you give up life in a modern world with modern technology where you feel your life is good or at least decent, and have someone you love very much... to live in medieval times where your only life is digging graves, working with dead/undead, dealing with people who probably don't know what a shower is, dodging a lunatic inquisitor who may think you're a witch next, and you aren't allowed to leave the village to go to the next town because... magic reasons blocking your body from entering it.
Idk about you but I think the novelty of being a gravekeeper in medieval times would quickly wear off to someone who's live most their life the modern good life xD
But that's the thing, expect a twist you often won't get it yea? lol.
I understand what you're saying, and I'm not downing you for it.
Just.. we expected this ending, all of us.. simply because it was already seeded from the beginning. Would've been nice if they diverted our expectations for something funny or surprising, since the game is in itself silly already..
But can't really get mad at the guy for wanting to go home either.. the medieval world sucks lol
But all the work he did was to get home. It wasn't useless. The work was working your way up to be able to finally go home, escape the world you got taken to.
The work paid off in a way that was expected.
But I mean, all games have to end at some point in story. You're free to go back and keep playing. But the story had to end somehow.
Yeaaa that's the thing about games like this. Stardew Valley has a similar issue. You wait based on character schedules and it pads out the game and forces you to wait if you miss a window. It's kinda dumb with this genre of game. It's one reason why as much as I praise SunHaven, I can't deny it's an extremely short game. Sun Haven if you don't know is like SDV and GYK, but it has less waiting, less schedules, less annoyances, and more fun stuff in it. IMO it's done right for its genre, buuuut it really shows how short that kind of game can be without the schedules and artificial time-frame padding.
If we're being ultra realistic, then the Keeper's life in the modern world was probably pretty average. Before he was dropped off in The Village by Red Eye, he was hit by a car while making a convenience store run on foot. It doesn't sound like he was some rich guy, so he probably had to work hard so he could spend a little time with his love at the end of the day.
In The Village, opening the Portal required him to become the town's most accomplished builder, crafter, smith, farmer, beverage brewer, chef, miner, jeweler, creative and academic writer, sword master, alchemist, and captain of industry. I repeatedly became the town's wealthiest resident, only to backslide when financing huge construction projects or purchasing an aristocratic title for my Keeper.
So, the Keeper's life in The Village has become quite comfortable. He makes the best beer and wine out of anybody, and cooks meals fit for a king. He is a beloved preacher in the only official church around, which is a towering cathedral hand-built by himself out of stone, marble, iron, and gold. He doubled and tripled anybody's highest expectations for the graveyard and the church, and built his front yard into a workshop where almost anything could be farmed or crafted.
His house has a TUNNEL under it that leads directly to both of is jobs, and the only tavern around. He invented running water, and is the only person in the Village who has it. I'm pretty sure that if Brad Pitt's character in Fight Club could figure out how to make soap from human fat, our protagonist can also do so.
TL;DR, life in The Village sucked before his arrival, but it was getting pretty good because of him, and there were serious upsides to being the village's richest and most ingenious and powerful resident. It also seems like there was a major conflict brewing between the Village and the Town, and that his industriousness could have made him a pivotal figure in that conflict.
I would HAPPILY shell out for a DLC that expanded the game's story after the ending, with the Keeper's Wife as an added character.
The fact that you do NOT leave IS actually a twist. Is it one we could have predicted, especially with the DLC's? Yes. But Keeper was expecting to leave in order to get his wife back. Everyone came to say goodbye. Instead he's staying and his wife was given to him.
Also, we don't know if Keeper can go back. He was hit by a car. I suspect he died. Ancient God just plucked his soul at time of death and brought him here (I refuse to go the coma/dream route, okay?).
We also don't know if the next game immediately picks up at this point... if it takes place at the same time (hello town who 100% has an aspect of Keeper running around) or what it might be. The fact is though, the curse is still a thing. The contract right now is being upheld by Keeper's presence, but if he leaves the curse starts again (which some people really DO NOT WANT. Ya know, like the semi immortal people who literally start ageing without a Keeper. Or did everyone miss that our dear tavern keep has aged since the Stranger Sins backflashes?).
If this were a complete story I would have wanted to see more. I want to see Edward and Seth rebuild for instance. I want to see places getting fixed up because it pains me greatly to fix the church and everything else is still in shambles. I would love to do a restoration project.
Since they want to give more story though, we can't have a total complete ending with just this game. Even if they decided to have a new Keeper as the protag for the next game, there's nothing to say we can't find out what happened to the last guy.
I think that would be silly though, since I do personally think focusing on what is going on in town would be the smartest move (especially given how much hate people still, to this day, have about "the town is a lie" even if it was never meant to be a thing. People just got so mad at the terrible wording/translation they just never recovered from it I guess).
So... if there was no way for another game to ever happen, yeah I'd probably feel like more is needed and that something is very much missing. As it stands though, this is like being mad that a trilogy or something didn't finish in book one.
If you haven't already, after finishing both the main story and Stranger Sins, there's another event at whatever the machine is called that explains some more stuff related to that line of thinking.
The endless loop effect or something I have forgotten since watching... lol
...It's something you really wouldn't forget, since it does set up a hypothetical GYK 2 as well as explain a few things. Might need to redo the Portal building bit to see it, though.
