So it says I need a carrot or cabbage etc to make this alchemy item, and yet although I have the hand mixer and carrots the carrot is greyed out in my inventory and I can't use it in the mixer.

I can't find any of the 'Solutions' in the tech tree to research.

Any item like carrots, ore, fish etc needs to be taken to the Study Desk and researched before you can use them in crafting.

^ this. Different kind of research, OP. With the exception of a few quests, the purpose of the Study Table (located in the church basement) - other than a good source of techpoints - is to prep certain products for use in alchemy. By *studying* them, you learn how to process them into various alchemical reagents. However, you do not need to study those reagents prior to using them at the alchemy workbenches in order to craft alchemical products.
