Alternatively, in the souls room, there are three 'broken' machines that can be repaired; a soul extractor (bottom-left), a soul healer (top right), and a soul portal (bottom right). Ideally, you'd extract the soul from a fresh corpse, heal the soul, then send it through the portal - the act of healing a soul produces sin shards.
Soul Container's are kinda optional / not-at-all necessary. Personally, wouldn't waste my time (or sin shards) on them until you can build the tier 3 variant.
