Furnace blueprint unlock?

Following a guide (best I've found) and it says I can go to the workyard to build a furnace. However the work table there doesn't have the furnace as an option. Is there some prerequisite I'm not aware of?

After your initial chat with the Bishop, the in-game tutorial (big yellow arrow) points you in the direction of the nearby Village, more precisely the local tavern owner. He'll ask you to bring a note to the blacksmith, and asking the blacksmith about metal ore should unlock the blueprint.

Ahhh, so I need to make sure I exhaust dialogue options with NPCs when given the chance then! Thank you!

The Blacksmith also mentioned slimes and gave me a sword, which I repaired. Where are the aforementioned slimes? The big yellow arrow is gone now.

Should be just to the north-east of his shop, two of them. They may be gone if too much time has passed, in which case you can reliably find four in the swamp north of Sweet Home, between dawn and noon - killing those should fulfill the task all-the-same.

Generally - certainly if there's a locked dialogue option that suddenly becomes unlocked (which, if you didn't kill the slimes, it wouldn't have been unlocked).
