Game sucks, fishing does not work

I have tried everything. Nothing i do brings up the mini game. I cast, land it in a 100 spot, then watch the bobber. I've tried left mouse click, left mouse hold, tap E hold E. Watching for some prebobber hand move. What the F am i doing wrong?

I play with a controller, you just press A immediately when the bobber goes under water. If you're too slow, you don't get anything.
Other than that, it's straightforward. If anything, finishing is too easy. The Goldfish is the only challenging fish to catch.

The timing is VERRY percice, you have to react in a split second or you don't get anything.

To fish, hold E until the cursor gets to the the depth you want. The vertical lines divide each area into shallow, medium and deep, and usually have 3 fish in each zone. The percentages represent your chances of catching each type in that zone with your current rod and bait combo.

Once you release E, you will cast your line. Watch the bobber and wait for it to go under. As soon as it moves, hit E again to try to hook the fish. It's a timing thing, but once you get it it's not hard - just hit E before the animation of it going under and popping back up ends.

When you successfully hook the fish, then the bar on the left becomes your focus. Your goal is to keep the fish within your yellow bar until the green bar fills up. Tap E to move the bar up, release it to make the bar go down. When you keep the fish in the yellow bar long enough to fill the green bar, you win and the fish is caught

I usually stare at the bobber. When the RIPPLE around the bobber first appears, then I :

TAP and HOLD

I use the best rod (when needed), while under the influence of the fishing buff.

CellNav is right, the ripple is the start of the bobber animation. I didn't really describe it that well. But basically you just hit E sometime between when the ripple appears and the bobber stops bobbing up and down to bring up the next part of the mini game.

Indeed, not all the time and mostly when I select a known gold fish. To be more exact, I :

TAP then ... HOLD

That moves the yellow bar into the middle of the tube where most likely the fast moving gold fish will be so I start with a little advantage (as it flies through the yellow). The fish doesn't always start at the bottom, from what I've experienced.

I find it's a problem to click quickly enough to get the game up, too--BUT the fish nuggets that Horadric sells take care of that perfectly. (Also, the buff timer doesn't run while you're actually fishing, so just one meal of nuggets will net you quite a lot of fish!)

Just avoid fishing, the only use it has (sadly) its to get golden peps from specific fishes to refine into golden lingots (that you are going to use as ingredients of some recipes probably twice in the entire game...). Thats all. Unfortunately in this game nothing is worthy, wasting so much time fishing for what?, to cook something that will take even more resources, or for what, selling it?? who cares, money is completely pointless in this game.

another visual clue that adds a few frames more time, theres a thin blue line around the bobber when it is in the water, this disappears just before the bobber dips, giving a few extra moments to react and hook the fish.

Fishing is awesome to jump-start the money at the beginning of the game. The trick is getting the lighthouse keeper to level up. Hint: there's a prayer for that. Fish Nuggets are your friends. I think I miss the bobber half the time without Nuggets.

Yeah, I was curious about fishing and went full bore on all the fishing spots and sold fish to the lighthouse keeper for awhile. It taught me the following :

1. Which bait gives better odds.
2. Which pole gives better odds (best to keep all 3 types of rods).

I still haven't caught the elusive Goldfish.
