Church workbench?
I have no idea how to build a church workbench because the option doesn't exist under the crafting table in the church basement or the chapel area. The study table needs conical glass which I need blue research points. I have no clue how to get around making blue research.

dissect a few body and use them on the Study Table to gain some blue.
be warned that you'll need faith to do that, which is also a freakin pain to gain early.

Your church basement already has a Study Table, no need to build another one unless you accidentally destroyed it.
Science points comes from studying books and papers, and is a different thing from blue points you get from crafting and writing, which one are you referring to?

My study table needs faith and science points. How do you get science?
Apparently I unlocked a book for 5 silver from the Astrologer to get 25 blue research. I assume this is the bottle neck needed to get points to unlock other methods to get blue research.

How do you study books when your study table needs the same science points?
Also I have no option to even build a workshop bench under the church. How are people building this table?

Study points (Science) and blue research points are different.
The study table requires Faith and Study points (Science).

The easiest way get Study points (Science) early on is to put Clean paper in the study table.
Clean Paper you can get from unlocking "Writing" (cost 5 blue pts) and then building a Desk.

Make some paper and use it at the Study table to get science from it. Then study bodyparts, especially blood fat and skull, they only cost 1 faith and sci each and give you a good amount of blue tech points.

IMPORTANT: With those tech points unlock the Stone Grave Fence, it only costs a few stones to craft but it also gives blue techpoints every time you craft one. With stone being very easy to get in the quarry you now have a unlimited supply of cheap techpoints without needing to spend science or faith points.

Where do you build a desk?

There is already one built in the church basement on the left side. No need to craft another.

So all I need is paper and faith or science points in the study table?
How do you build the workbench in the church basement?

You need both faith and science. The workbench in the church needs to be unlocked in the tech tree, but I think you can get clean paper or some books (can be used for science points, too) in the different broken-down shelves in the church basement for the first studies. The study table is on that little dais to the left of the build table. Everything you can research shows you which points it will give. If you can, do Dig's first quest and get the cake recipe beforehand - it gives your tech points (the red, green, and blue ones) a boost when eaten before you study something.

You don't need Blue Points or anything else that's been mentioned for the Church Workbench.
I'm going to try and break the subject down into (hopefully) simpler and smaller pieces of important information.

The Church Workbench blueprint is unlocked in the Book Writing Technology Tree (third icon, lighter blue with a feather design), under Paper Crafting for 10 Red points.

The only requirements are the 10 Red points and to have Research (Book Writing Tree) unlocked, which happens automatically when you Reopen the Church and is the first of the entire tree.

After unlocking the Tech, you can make it at the little table with the blueprint on it in the Alchemy Lab (the tunnel under the church accessed by the stairs on the right).
You will need 9x Flitch, 10x Nails and 4x Complex Iron Parts (mind, you also need to unlock these in the Smithing Tree if you haven't yet).
And you're set with your brand new Church Workbench.

>>> now for the rest of the stuff that's been mentioned <<<

TECH POINTS
Tech points are the 'currency' you need to unlock technologies, and come in 3 types:
Red (physical), Green (nature) and Blue (knowledge - spiritual and otherwise).

How to get them:
  • Red drop on most physical labour tasks (ex: mining, crafting stuff from Wood/Stone);
  • Green drop from most nature/biology related tasks (ex: farming, autopsy, cutting trees);
  • Blue drop from spiritual and knowledge-related tasks, like the mentioned Stone Grave Fence, but the easiest way in early game is through Study of certain items

FAITH
These are yellow orbs you can get from giving sermons (at least in early game). Amount is defined by the type of Sermon item used and Church Rating. You can only give sermons on Pride day (the purple sun symbol); if you miss it, you'll need to wait for the next one or reload your save if you haven't slept.

They are used together with Science to Study items for Tech Points and for a hint of what you can decompose them into, if anything.
They are also necessary for some NPC quests so be mindful of how you spend them. This is why, unlike Science, Faith is an item you can carry in your inventory.

STUDY and SCIENCE
Study items at a Study Table for Tech Points and information (alchemical use). You can only study each type of item once. Amount of Science and Faith depends on the item. Some items cannot be studied, but they will show no Tech Point icon in their tooltips if so.

You get Science at the Study Table itself by "studying" Clean Paper (and later Notes, Chapter, Book and Lens, in increased amounts). It works exactly like Wooden Sticks, Firewood and Coal do at the Oven or Furnace to give you Fuel.

PIGSKIN PAPER and CLEAN PAPER
These crafting recipes are what you unlock along with the Church Workbench blueprint, and what you'll need most early on to make Science at the Study Table. Both are crafted at the Church Workbench.

Pigskin Paper is made from Skin harvested from Corpses at the Morgue (1 skin makes 4 paper), or from Bat Wings if you've killed some (5 wings make 2 paper).

Clean Paper is made with Pigskin Paper (1 pigskin makes 4).

Clean Paper can also be crafted at a Desk (which needs to be unlocked with Writing at the Book Writing Tree for 5 Blue and 5 Red points) from Ruined Books and River Sand, or at the Paper Press (which comes much later in the tree and depends on other Tech being unlocked, yet doesn't require Blue points) with Paper Glop and White Paint.
The first option is the best in early game for obvious reasons.

>>> end <<<

I tried not to leave any spoilers but if there's anything that should be hidden, let me know.
Happy to help with any other questions, but all of this information can be found at the game's Wiki[graveyardkeeper.gamepedia.com].
There may be a few things missing, like pages about the new DLC, and some obsolete information because of the most recent updates, but most of it is useful. At the very least, it should point you in the right direction.

Ok,so I found Comfort of Faith in the tech tree which unlocks the church bench. However it needs 10 red points and 5 blue points. Once I do this then I see the paper writing and stuff I need for future blue points and science points.
Thank you for helping me with this tight progression spot. I see now that it's crucial to read very carefully the tech trees.

Yeah, unless you really love that sense of being a bit lost (it does fit well narratively) this is a game where you might wanna play with the wiki open, especially when buying precious new tech. Often you'll unlock things that need components from another tech tree, and if you haven't unlocked those yet it's quite frustrating. Likewise, trying to work out the alchemy recipes by brute force is painful
StarkSkye Nov 2, 2020 @ 5:16pm
I don't think we're talking about the same thing. I looked up the Tech you mentioned and Comfort of Faith is in Theology (second icon, yellow, symbol looks like a cross between a pyramid and an eye), not in Book Writing (third icon, lighter blue, feather symbol).

To be clear, Comfort of Faith will not give you the Church WORKbench crafting station. It will give you the Church Bench furniture to place inside the Church, which helps increase your Church Rating ✝ by one point - just like Gravestones and Fences do for your Graveyard.

You had originally asked about the Church Workbench, the workstation that lets you craft paper, book bindings, fertilizer and embalming liquids, and is created/placed in the Alchemy Lab (church basement). Is that not what you're looking for?

Specially because you need the Church Workbench to get your first Blue points (without buying them). It makes the Clean Paper needed to 'trade' for Science at the Study Table.

Stone Grave Fences are a good suggestion but to unlock them you need 10 Blue points, plus the energy to craft them (and break them apart again if you're only farming). You get 5 Blue points for each one created.

I did forget to mention there's a way to get Clean Paper without crafting it: you can buy it from the Astrologer on Sloth Day (blue moon symbol). You can find him by the Lighthouse. However, the base cost is 1 Silver and money is a little tight in early game too.

Nope Starkofgenius your right about the church workbench under paper crafting. I also see that I unlocked a church bench as well, lol
So much for taking my own advice...wow I need my glasses.
The main thing is I've unlocked some more stuff to do in the game and loving it. But don't worry I'll probably be back later with another problem if the wiki don't solve it. Thanks!

One thing that should be pointed out: Don't waste tech points of any colour on things you don't need yet, especially blue tech points as they are the hardest to get. Make your tech tree choices carefully as you can end up making the game harder on yourself by buying techs you don't really need yet and then not having enough when you need to buy something you need *right now*. Also don't rush to upgrade everything as soon as possible, especially the interior of the church, as that can lead to spending tech points on stuff you *want* but don't absolutely *need* yet. Tier 2 or 3 candelabras everywhere give you a nice bonus to faith every weekend, but if you don't have the materials for the 6 that are necessary or the 15 (or so?) that are possible, you are probably better off making a lot of tier 1 candelabras. Besides, candles are expensive to make or buy.
