Save Editing or Debug Options?
Now, I'm not one for cheating, especially in a game like this where the labor is no small part of what makes the reward feel good.
But at 33 hours, just scratching the surface of lategame after having automated most of my stuff with zambos and moving into the final tiers of the research tree, my laptop shut down due to a faulty battery while saving and I lost my savefile.
Kinda really bummed out about that. Considering how grindy the game naturally is, I'd like to know if there was some way to recover my progress in a hypothetical fresh save. Unlikely I'd be able to recover stuff like story progress but if I could in the very least salvage my research and materials I had been stockpiling, it would dampen the blow of having to start from nothing again.

There is not really a way to debug. (Unless you are talking about attaching a C# debugger, but restoring data there would be a pain).
But there is a save editor which you can use to get your items back - https://github.com/NetroScript/Graveyard-Keeper-Savefile-Editor

Use it in proper way and do not forget about backups, please!

After some further thought I decided to just bite the bullet and play my way back to where I was legit, because of the way the tech tree works and story-locked locations it wouldn't really make that much of a difference if I got research points and materials back. Still a bummer but I guess now I won't forget to backup again.

Tho, I noticed that on the save folder there are a pair of backup files. Did the original one also perhaps get erased or overwritten?

The backups which the game creates are "switched" everytime you save, so if you saved before your crash, your new save saved, the one from before was moved to 1, 1 was moved to 2, the old 2 was deleted.
