Have you built the church yet? If I remember, the church basement just comes with a study table. Then you can study some organs for your first points.
Then go buy up hemp and hemp seeds from Dig (the bum/slacker between the Tavern and the Lighthouse) and make Rope.
You can also get them from making Stories but that costs Faith.
Study only things that give blue points, unless you really need a lot of red or green, BUT...remember that you can't make powder/extract/solution from anything you haven't studied, so study those things too even when they don't give blue points, but only after you get the alchemy processing stations (alchemy mill, hand mixer, distillation cube) and alchemy workstation.
Science is from papers/books, so just save up your corpse skin and bat wings, convert them to "pigskin" and then to clean paper, and burn those up in the study table for science points.
NOTE: Do not make too many science points too qucikly. You likely will want to move your study table to a new location (the starting spot wastes the location it's at by blocking space for two possible tables - shame on you Lazy Bear) at some point and you lose ALL science points when you do that.

Also, be very careful with the books, they can glitch your 1000 / 3000 point achievements (I found this out the hard way). Apparently if you use a book that pushes you over the 1000 or 3000 mark the achievement never pops... which means I'm never getting my 1000 blue point achievement =(. Hopefully they patch this...
