(mostly because it was either instant craft or wait for a machine to "bake" it) but it did cost energy to use most of the items in the game, rod included.
No, it's a very specific design decision made to spread the spectrum of catchable fish across the various fishing rods and bait types. Just because you got hung up on having your "elite super class 9000 ultimate tool" doesn't make it a dumb design decision, but it's a typical gamer fault to blame the dev rather than accept responsibility for your own failure to completely grok the fishing system.
Incorrect. You must catch at least one frog via fishing and then study it. Studying the frogs bought from Clotho doesn't work.
Then you haven't fished much. As with every other thing in GyK, fishing progresses in stages. If you delay it until you can just buy the best rod and bait, you're going to trip over your own cleverness. Again, player fault, not dev fault. When you want to fish, it's not a huge chore to gather the various rods and bait types and go do it, except maybe for certain types of people.
Fishing in Stardew Valley is as much of a pain in the ass as it is in GyK, just for slightly different reasons. At least you don't automatically fail in GyK when the fishing success bar drops to zero, while in SdV you do, sorry Charlie. And if you think there is no energy use in SdV fishing, you're deluding yourelf, looking through rose coloured glasses, etc.
...Sooo, the developer set the rules for tools thru use through all the other tools in the game, but for some reason the fishing rods work differently.
I agree with my fellow posters that this design issue could have been explained or taught better.
Before you whine about someone's attitude you should check your own at the door.
