I had this issue just half an hour ago but it solved itself.
Came here with the same problem, found the same solution. I had put it in my trunk with all my stories, cleverly disguised.

A bit cheaty but in case of bugs everything is permissible.
Is an item, is very easy to misplace. Best off if you keep all items like this in a safe place, like the chest at the foot of your bed, and never talk to an npc with your inventory full so it never gets left behind on the ground.
A lot of people think this is a story driven game (including the devs), an RPG, a farming game (you get a small garden, not a whole farm) or somethhing else, but it's really not. What it is, based on an analysis of the things you do, is a time and resource management game with gardening and RPG elements.
