Is mead useless?

You get mead after you can make gold star beer, but you can't sell the mead, as far as I can see, and it's energy/health bonuses are so small...

What's it good for?

Any low-energy food is good in combination with food potions. This potion increases power of all your food bonuses x3 times. So, if your food / drink gives +15 energy, it becomes +45 with potion. Its lenght is 5 minutes, you can buy it from witch or craft.

Yea, getting the mead recipe was pretty disappointing, it gives less health and energy than regular beer, but it uses honey instead of tons of grain which could be easier to obtain if you have apiaries. You can't sell mead, but you can use it for dungeoneering I guess.

I hope they buff the mead in the future and let us sell it, that would make it worthwhile. For now, I wouldn't bother with it.
