What do I use for fishing bait?

All the bugs seem to catch the same fish and I cant find anything else to use as bait. What else can I use to catch fish?

you can buy lures from the fisherman

You can also use some of the fish you catch.

I used maggots for a while, but the steel lure from the fisherman lets me get really great fish.

Bugs, maggots (getting it for making compost at your farm), lures. The catch depends on quality of rod (3 tiers), cycle of day/night and place where you trying to catch fish. There is ocean, river, swamp and lake with different fishies.

I know frogs have a preference for a certain bait (butterflies) as well as certain locations (swamp is best) and times of day (daytime). I assume it's the same with other fish, too. I'd experiment using different critters at different times of day to see if I noticed any improvement.

I have been messing around with the swamp upper and lower river fishing spots and there are still fish I cant catch. I bought both lures and have every type of bug but they still show at 0% both day and night.

EDIT: I tested the sea and lake too and had the same issue.

Moving from left to right the fish I am missing slots numbered 1 to 9 are...

Sea (9 fish slots) 1,2,4,7,9, (9 is not a 0 but only a 5 with a gem lure so I have to assume theres something better.)

Lake (7 fish slots) 1,4,5,6,7

Lower river (9 fish slots) 1,4

Swamp (4 fish slots) 1,3 ( I know at least one of these have to be frogs)

Upper river (6 fish slots) 3,6
