It's strongly implied that this paper originates from those ruined books and that your character has already automatically salvaged the paper from the books, the moment they pick them up. The work is already done for you.
The books themselves are a junk item that should be destroyed.
I got a paper product along with my books.
To answer your original question though, I have never been able to figure out how to use the books. I was just as puzzled as you at first, until I accepted that the paper product I got alongside it was probably what the game meant.
Then what about Pyrite ore?
You don't. when you recycle a book . you get research points.
Like most everything else in this game, you can destroy it and ignore it.
