You can't do it simply! So the max my church can ever have is 15. They appear in build mode, but nowhere to build! Everything is red.

But how do you get the first upgrade? You need 20, and the max is 15. What do I need to upgrade to 20, and why is it available as an option before the first upgrade?

You can easily get 25-27 by filling all the spaces in the very first church.

Confessionals give you +5 each, and there's two spots near the entrance that are the exact right size for them. Once you unlock them, it's easy to get up to 20.

Once you've unlocked them in the tech tree, they require 16 wooden planks and 6 complex iron parts each. And every so often someone shows up to confess, and you get a faith & a story from them.

So it is a matter of blue "spiritual" that I need? I am sorry to ask, but besides the astrologer books, what exactly grants these spiritual points?

They're found in the theology tree, under The Power of Faith (just after the one that lets you build the benches). I can't see what you need to unlock it as I've already done that and it just shows a checkmark now.

If you study things like graveyard decorations at the study table, you get quite a lot of blue points.

I'm not sure what you mean by study points? Do you mean science? You can get that by deconstructing paper or notes or books at the study table. If you have a desk, you can make paper very easily (if rather gruesomely!). If not, buy it from the astrologer until you can build the desk.
