It's actually kinda known who this is, by the very specific design. It's the man with the red eye, the main villain from Punch Club.
And while your comparison to the Lord of the Rings match pretty well GK, for PC it was exactly like ending the Empire Strikes Back just after "I am your father" (And i do mean "exactly" :) ). So i wasn't surprised at the end of GK, but i was still as frustrated as you.
Even for 120 hours if you have to restard the whole game because of a bug :>
However I do think the price (below 20eur even) is fine for such a game. I also wished we'd get more for an ending but can't say it's overpriced.
I know this is about 4 years late, but I just feel the need to have my input here.
I bought the game a while ago and every now and then i get HOOKED on this game. bsolutely love it. I finished it just now and it dawned on me, the ending sucks. I should probably also mention I have all the DLC's as well.
I'm a completionist so I made sure I finished all the DLC quests, was well on my way to understand the "Better Save Soul" mechanics with the skulls as well, but I felt like I missed something since I couldn't remove any red or white skulls on the worktable. The DLC parts just ends with no real conclusion, so many cliff hangers about every NPC in the game. I don't mean just the DLC quests, but everything feels like a cliff hanger. Sure the "Sins" have their own little endings, but "Stranger Sins" focuses so much on the lore and stories about the NPC's ages ago, and with that DLC it makes so little sense that the game itself don't have a good ending lore.
"Game of Crone" is kind of just there for perks and a good way to start the game with some extra materials, ingredients and money, but it also ends suddenly.
Went to check the last quest just to see the ending and I remembered how much the ending of the game sucks. I completely agree with everything you say Earthplayer.
There is no real ending for any NPC with the slight exceptions of the 6 sins in the game. Donkey, Garry, Euric, Teodoro etc, and the man with the red eyes should defenitly have more of a story as well.
And don't even get me started on the part where you don't even reach 100 friendship with alot of the NPC's. It makes it feel unfinished.
Watching the ending made me think that the game could continue, we get to know what really happened to him and at the very end game the protagonist realized that him and his gf is stuck there but at least they have each other or something like that.
I'm so invested in the stories and lore while playing the game that I don't care how it would have continued, as long as it continued and not just this abrupt ending. The game takes a long time to get to the end point and this being the end of the game without any real explenation, not even saving the file to register the quests finished is just very anticlimactic
A few comments, I always though Hodaric was supposed to be greed as he is ridiculously money grubbing the entire game. But I guess it could be the Keeper too as you end up ludicrously rich at the end.
I think the ending where the man with 1 eye splits you is designed to set up for a sequel where you play the other half in the village south of the town, or in another world entirely.
The stories are left a little open ended with mystery, I actually kind of like that in stories, having to figure out for yourself a little bit.
Unresolved issues seem to be, who is the man with 1 red eye, he seems to be the old god that was originally worshipped by the village, but no information about who or what he is, other than he was willing to create the pact to remove the undead issue.
What is in the town to the south? You walk in and immediately die then you can never go back. I am tipping there is a second keeper in the town and the followers of the old god reside there, separate to the followers of the new god who are in the village.
You CAN make a game and end the plot and still go on a sequel, you dont need to cut in half and finish with a cliff hanger. Its just give you a uncompleted felling, like all the journey in the game was pointless.
Those games are amazing, but i will never play another one from lazy bear/tiny build, ever.
