How do I make a book?

I'm trying to make a combo prayer. It says I need a book, but the only recipe I see is for book_hard which has a different icon. Is this bugged?

that's it, you use a softcover with it and it will turn into a journal like book.

Or you could use any cover, really. The better the cover and chapter you use for it, the higher the odds of better book. Getting gold cover requires gold jewelery details from merchant and a bronze star hard cover from the astrologer. Making quality books, quality pages, and quality chapters can be buffed if you have the playwright perk and also you used prayer for inspiration at sermon. That gives 18 minutes of better writing skills. With these, you can aquire higher tier prayers, which are FAR SUPERIOR to what you can get at bronze quality.

So a gold star prayer gives better results than the bronze version? I though it was just the base success rate that was improved. I have a few gold star stories...

Quite the contrary, base success chance is lowered, since the church score requirement for silver is doubled, and for gold is tripled.
Holding a sermon with combo prayer(silver quality) requires 30 church score to be 100% successful. Silver quality Donation prayer for instance requires 20 church score, and at gold requires 30 church score.

Do note that you can make a chapter using only 1 page in all 3 slots, while not having any others in nearby chests or inventory. It will consume just the one, and you will save on those rare gold stories. It's currently a bug, but for the sake of testing, might as well make use of it right?

It is possible to get the church to it's highest score by filling all the buildable areas with tier 2 chandelabras. Instead of a confessional, put 2 chandelabras there, instead of shrine, 2 more. If only the benches could be replaced with chandelabras too, oh such a shame.

I didn't see room for the shrine. Can you get the bigger church in the alpha? It would suck to tear down my confessionals, but if that is what it takes.

No, church is not upgradeable yet. Theoretically you would place 1 shrine and 1 confessional, on either side in those bigger areas. Probably two incense burners in the slightly smaller areas above those, and 2 candelabras by the pedestal. That's probably the intention of the devs, but since tier 2 candelabras are good enough, ain't nobody gonna build the other crap unless they rebalance it :)

Also, confessionals aren't worth it currently. They give +2 and a very low chance of getting a story and +1 faith. But this occurs too rarely in my opinion. It can take weeks to recharge this effect. In their stead, having 2 sets of candelabras 2 would give your church an overal +4 more score, meaning you get a guaranteed +1 faith each week from sermons, + may increase your sermon bonus you get from faith prayers. Much more reliable for faith farming.
