Sword parrying confuses me
I know it's automatic, but that's about it. It seems really finnicky, is there anyway to use it to your advantage?

If a sword touches a sword, the sword will be blocked unconditionally. Therefore, you can block with your sword by turning the screen according to the direction of the opponent's attack. Not many people use this technique, but if you practice it well, you can use it usefully. By the way, this technique is very useful in multiplayer. (+It is good to use it as a last resort when you cannot avoid an opponent's attack with a dash. Because sometimes there is a bug where you take damage even though you hear the sound of the sword being blocked. It's like using a block as a last resort when you can't avoid it in boxing. ) I also occasionally use this technique and it has helped me a lot.

I've been wondering about it... thanks, didn't know it was unconditional though.

it isn't any deeper beyond what the tutorial says, if a sword hits yours, it gets blocked (most of the time). Some enemies (sword2, sword3, sword4, sword5) have the now hidden "unbalance" upgrade which stuns you temporarily if you block their attack, but that doesn't come up often. Those enemies also have the "good form" upgrade which makes them more resistant to that stun. The overseer and both flavors of the emperor also have a version of unbalance that knocks you over if their sword hits yours.

doing this ends up easier in multiplayer with the great sword but it is still inconsistent like Crilly said.

Some people think this mechanic is biased to the robots. This is correct. The player has a lvl 2 block upgrade, whilst Mk 2 and above sword robots have unbalancing 1 & 2, and Mk 3 and above sword robots have a lvl 3 block upgrade.
