How do I open the map?
Aside from exploring manually, I mean - at the start of the game, I can't afford enough supplies to idly fly around. I need to know the locations of the ports of interest to even have a chance of reaching them in that rickety old thing.

It feels like it should be an in-game advice, at least.

See, that's the thing - they say stuff like "south-south-east of New Winchester", which is immediately followed by a remark that north, west, south and east are not necessarily the same directions as on Earth.
And while I tried travelling bottom-bottom-right, I simply cannot find any port in that direction before my supplies run out.
And yes, I bought as much fuel and supplies as I can with starter 100 sovereigns. Still not enough.

So I need either a way to unlock port's location before travelling there, or figuring out which direction is which.

Ok, I can see how the bit of meta text about "north, west, south and east are not necessarily the same directions as on Earth" can be confusing. So, this was a bit of prose originally meant to suggest that owing to our proc gen system, the location of ports may change (before you've discovered and docked at them).

So this is how it works. On a new save game with nothing discovered, when you see directions like south-south-east of New Winchester, that is absolutely accurate and functions how you'd expect (just like on Earth). That port or landmark will be south-south-east of New Winchester.

If you don't go to that port and discover it in that session, and instead you turn the game off (or return to the title screen), then the next time you load your save file, it's possible that the segment which contains that port will have moved to a different location within the region. The directions to that port will be updated in the journal of course. But this is what the meta text was hinting at - that the High Wilderness is weird and can change around you. That is, until you dock at the ports. Once you've docked, those segments become locked down and their positions will not change.

You can read more about it in our troubleshooting guide under the The directions to a port has changed in my journal section.

Bargains tell you where to find certain ports.
The map only shows where you've already been, however.

Pretty sure the tutorial says, otherwise you can check the controls window.

Mmm, don't remember reading that directions aren't the same as on Earth. I've always explored the regions on that assumption (top North, left West, etc.) and it's always been accurate.

Other than that, your scout will tag the port in the chart UI if it sees it. But that's it.

Scouting costs supplies too... =\
Damn. Do you absolutely need to hire officers? I skipped on the test-driver available in New Winchester, could he increase engine efficiency or something?
Elitewrecker PT Nov 28, 2019 @ 7:58am
You'll wanna hire officers. Stat improvement for the skill checks, new bargains from the connections. But no engine efficiency buff no.

But ye, you shouldn't be having this much problem. The random flying around is only for the first hour, until you find the couple closest ports. It's very easy to make money in the Reach after you start farming the bargains and prospects.

Wait what the ♥♥♥♥... every time I reload the game, quest location seems to change?
Elitewrecker PT Nov 28, 2019 @ 9:09am
What do you mean.
vindicar Nov 28, 2019 @ 9:21am
I mean, I have a quest to travel with Fastidious Inspector to Port Prosper.
Except if I quit without saving and continue the game (because I run out of supplies trying to find that ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ place), the directions change.
First it was "east-south-east", then "west-south-west", now it's "north-west" relative to New Winchester.
EDIT: reloaded again, it's west-south-west again. Bull$hit.

That shouldn't happen. When you mean without saving (because you can just reload at the last port if you die) do you mean starting a new captain?

No, I mean "Return to the title screen" and then "Yes" when it warns that progress will be lost.

Yeah that shouldn't be happening.
vindicar Nov 28, 2019 @ 9:42am
I dunno, it does. And while I find some other ports, I can't find that Port Prosper. Labirintine map design doesn't help either - one wrong turn and you won't have enough fuel/supplies for the trip. >_<
Refund time, I guess...

It's not actually labyrinth, there are very few actual dead ends. If anything this should make it easier because a path will usually lead somewhere new to find.

This happens because, every time the map loads(ex:exiting and booting up the game)undescovered locations are randomized,so the directions change,at least, until you dock at it.
