Why do historical fans keep whining about Total War-Warhammer series?
I have been a Total War fan since Medieval 2 period and played all of the games, except Thrones of Brittania and Troy. I like both historical games and Warhammer series. As a LOTR and Tolkien fan, I like the Warhammer series the most. But that doesn't mean I have to hate the historical games and according to my observations, the majority of Warhammer players like the historical games as well.

As for historical fans, it seems the majority of this group have an absolute hate towards Warhammer games and other Total War games released after Warhammer (ToB, 3K, Troy). CA is criticized by this mob for ignoring the historical fans and paying too much attention on the fantasy games, even though there's only 2 fantasy games. The reason behing this shallow argument, they consider both 3K and Troy are fantasy games, even though they don't contain any fantasy creatures such as dragons, trolls, elves, dwarfs, minatours etc. They always keep whining about being neglected by CA, but that's not true. We have a lot of historical games some of which were released just a few years ago (Troy and 3K) and contain interesting mechanics, diplomacy, depth, optimization and a lot of positive features. And there old but gold games, our precious MW2, Empire, Napoleon, Rome 2, Shogun 2, Attila and a remastered Rome coming soon.

Considering all of these things, I don't understand why historical fans keep whining about being neglected by CA and why they hate the only two fantasy games we have. I hope they will stop nagging when CA announces the new historical game some time next year. But I fear their delusions will go on forever.

Some are just trolling, others like to live in a pretend world where Total War games weren't fantasy games. In either way, they're not going to stop and it best to just ingore the issue ;)

People are allowed to express their opinion, even if it seems unreasoanble.

It is what it is. They care enough to cry about it and well it's pretty lame but hey it comes from a place of misplaced affection for a series that owes them a big fat zero.

Dem da harsh breaks.

Because historical franchise lack attention atm. The last one is troy.... lets not include that. The last one is 3k, it is fine early to mid game but its end game is one of the most boring and tedious in total war title. Looking how much CA put attention to warhammer, they are basically jealous.

Some of them may be trolls, but I don't think most of them are. Just at look at a few Youtubers, for example Jackie Fish and Pixelated Apollo, both are historical fans and the latter quitted the Total War games for a while because he hates fantasy Total War games (according to him 3K and Troy are fantasy games as well). Unfortunately his subscribers share his opinion and keep whining about this historical vs fantasy nonsense.

I wouldn't exactly call Troy historical the actual details we have of the real life conflict if fairly sketchy and the main version we are familiar with is far more a story then history. While 3K on the other hand is based on a period we have quite detailed records on. So saying its not the current "historical title" is very far fetched. Although having said that, the combat is mostly dominated by single entity characters and the game mod that goes back to traditional generals bodyguard units is clearly being neglected.

Most of the dislike for Warhammer and the other recent titles comes from a desire to keep things as grounded as possible without that single entity characters. But I'm actually not sure if this can really be applied well to many other settings becides 3K and Mythical Greece.

I'm aware that 3K and Troy are different from the traditional games but they are still categorized as historical games. Single entities and mythological aspects don't change this. These features add just story effects and I understand the dislike of traditionalists about them. What I don't understand is that why their dislike turned into zeal and hatred towards all the innovations added into the new games? You know, this kind of fanatism is risky and unhealty for their mental states.

That's fine though. If they like fantasy games like Rome 1/2 or Medieval 2 more than that's their choice. It sad when they have to whine about things not going their way but they have their right to make their voice heard. CA decided to change their gameplay in recent titels and change it always bound to alienate parts of the audience.

I really like 3K timeline long before CA even decide to make TW3K, but even for me I cant love that title no matter how much I reinstalled that game. The game seriously has fatal design flaw in terms of unit variety. They are all locked, by the time you unlock most of them, you dont actually need them anymore. So it is your endless grind of using low end tier peasant units or royal elite units.

Troy is kind of fine but considering how much they butchered the historical portion, most people would rather straight away play a mythological version of it. If CA learn anything from a single humanoid entity units, they should know that they are almost immune to arrow and OP as hell. They should stop releasing any single entity unit for historical title.

3 kingdoms setting is just a story , like the troy events . Technicall both settings are as much historical as you would classify lore/tales as historical .
Ysthrall 2021 年 3 月 29 日 上午 2:13
Hmm. Having not played them, I'd class 3K and Troy as "mythic" more than "fantasy".

But it's an ill-defined genre.

I doubt that the majority of historical fans complain re fantasy. Quite a few happily play it. But for those who feel (thinking back to the release of game 1...):

a) CA has betrayed i's True Fans by leaving historical gaming
b) Everything in the TW range from now on will be tainted with singing unicorns and sparkly vampires
c) More fantasy games = less historical games
d) That the hybridising of two franchises has led to a dumbing down of the TW series, a lobotomised and cartoony "babies first Total War" that has thrown away 20 years of careful development and building complexity in the pursuit of cash

...then they will be severely unhappy.

I mean c) is the only real argument, in that if ALL of the resources of CA went into making historical games, then there would be more historical games. All the pie instead of half of it.

On the other hand, given that CA is doing well with the fantasy stuff, it's a bigger pie overall....

Fandoms are inclined to hold onto opinions for years. If not longer. Nearly as bad as politics.

To quote a thread title (or two, or three....) from the first weeks of the game 1 forums:

"Remember Rome2!!! NEVER buy ANYTHING from CA, EVER!!!"

Some people are just stuck in the past. There are people complaining about Rome Remastered, what did you expect?
eldiabs 2021 年 3 月 29 日 上午 3:58
I still have some old, historically accurate board games. One is about the first Gulf War and there are a lot of cardboard squares with symbols on them. Perhaps they can go back to those while the rest of us enjoy our magics, monsters, gunpowder, and laser beams on the computer screen.
Mors Avis 2021 年 3 月 29 日 上午 5:51
The most amusing ones are the YouTubers who haven't played a TW Game since Rome or Med2--cuz they hate the newer games, and do nothing but criticize them--but, for some reason, they still feel that they should be in CA's partnership program.

They can't understand why they were dropped, and, as a result, they trash Warhammer on their channels out of spite. Clearly, they don't understand how business works, and the word "partnership" eludes them. Their sense of entitlement is off the charts.
