You do this in the items menu,bottom right.
If you want to use the lord later but just don't want to pay for their upkeep, when you disband them the game counts them as wounded, even if they're not immortal, so you'll still have access to them after a base of 5 turns.
For legendary lord, nope.
Of course, if they don't have the immortality trait you could send them on a walking tour of Norsca... something'll probably get 'em.....
If you just want them out of the field and not leading any armies....
1) remove any troops in their armies, through transfer or disbanding.
2) disband that lord (you may want to remove their equipment and followers first) : click on them in the army loadout, right click, disband.
3) They'll turn up again in your listing of available generals, in a few turns. But you never have to give them an army to command again.
4) As they are now free to recruit in future, they can be useful as quick substitutes when your LL is injured or you'e recruiting reinforcements....
